A study in contrasts (70 911S and 78 911SC)
Eric Mckenna aka Stuttgart stopped by the house today to check out my new purchase. He has this horny lowered SC auto-x/daily driver car that is just killer. The car looks pure Billy Bad Ass. We each took turns driving the cars and the 180hp from a 200,000 mile SC is certainly a lot more usable than the 180 hp from my little 2.2. Both cars are great to drive, but are totally different from each other. The S redlines at 7000 and you need to use all thos RPMs to get max performance. The SC has a lot more usable torque down low. Here are some pics of the pair.
We also went for a quick drive in the VW. Power to weight, right Eric???? ;-) Its cool meeting fellow Pelicanheads. I think I will be a lot more tempted to try the Autocross thing now that I know someone that does it here in town.

Hey Guys,
I have to say that the S was a KILLER car!! The sound of the 2.2 hitting 7K was was .. well nothing short of AWESOME!!!The SC would split if I ran it that high. The car is in GREAT shape.. I love the Aluminum Deck cover.. I want one for the SC I am sold on the early cars.. I now know what everyone menas when they say the early cars are true drivers car they are more raw!!! I like that feel.. The shift gates were a bit tricky as the are dog legged back, but it shifted better than the 915 does. After driving both they are for sure two totally differsnt cars! I like them both for what they are. I like the early cars more after driving 911S. No worries to my SCWDP brothers.. I will NEVER get rid of the SC she is my baby!! .. I look forward to doing some auto-X races with Dave. And YES I KNOW REALLY KNOW WHAT A LIGHT CAR WITH POWER CAN DO!!!!!! That Bug nearly broke my neck!! KurtB DO NOT mess with the VW Bug's that are a bit loud.. they may hand you yer A$$!! HAHAHAHAAHAH

Tim, Im thinking about it. Im concerned with tire clearance with those 16x6 wheels tho. Probably worth a shot however.

heheh been there done that....
lower the front and give yourself a touch more camber..... the car will be "busy" to drive... but the look!!!!!! I used to kick but in DE's with my 2.2 when i was invited to instruct, and run in the instructor group it became apparent that displacement counts!!!!! but these early cars are blasts to drive

Stuttgart good to hear CP has an AX influence! Get him to cruise it at 8/10 for the first AX event. CP request an instructor and share a little shot gun time in the instuctors hot P car too.
CP's got a helmet and must have the stones, he's hit a 110mph in the 1/4 with his VW. CP what size tires are on the S? When you lower the front maybe some 205/50/16 radials and -1.5 front camber give you more fender clrearance. Lowered struts could give you more clearance maybe -2.8 front camber. These lowered struts and 16x7 Simmons rims with 225/50/16 Vicor racers fit on the front of my 69 911. Would some Kumho Victor racers be allowed in his class? Which group do you guys AX with? PCA, SCCA? Check out the book Secrets of solo racing by Henry A Watts. Lot's of good information. Last edited by ted; 08-17-2002 at 07:33 PM.. |

I agree with you Tim, daves S was a killer car!! I'd love to get use to the shift pattern and have a real spirited run in her.. you are right The early cars a real BLAST!
... I can still hear the car singing in my head.. and the lovely snaps and pops when letting off the gas and then jumping back into the gas. what a sound!! Say , how can I get that sound out of my SC with having to buy an S or an old RS hahahah The SC's always have that SC sound to them... which isn't BAD but it's not like the MFI2.2 I was in today!Dave, Love the Car. Btw... I think I have a bite on the offer you mentioned today. My friend Jemey wants to look at it.. he said if all was decent he'd right a check on the spot. Ted,
I am working on CP..The "911S" is already set up! hahaha I think i can get him out.. once he gets a few AX's done maybe myself and some of the others can pull him out to one of the DE's and either Mid Ohio or Putnum .. maybe Nelson's.. but I am for sure working on him .. I have a feeling CP can drive well enough as it is .. i'd love to hear and see the "S" whipping it up on the track and the local Auto-X's.. I was watching some Vid's of you boys out in SoCal.. at the D strip all I can say is DAMN!!!! I'd hate to run into one of ya at a light! hahahahaha Those damn things MOVE!!!! You push him from yer end as well on the Auto -X thing o.k.! hahah we'll get him out there Ted, The answer is yes, to both of the questions... I run with PCA, SCCA and any other local sports car club that put one on.. hahah i love then .. but i have to get to the track.. I NEED to go to Mid Ohio.. and I need CP to go with me.. hint.. hint... Eric Mckenna 78SC

To paraphrase Road & Track... about the 1970 911S (a baby blue one, IIRC) ... Performance on the order of an American muscle car, without the stigma of low price ...

Are those cup wheels on the SC? I love black wheels and am thinking of getting some to replace my cookie cutters. What size are they - did you paint them, and do they need spacers?
Very nice beetle too - a friend of mine has something similar with a very natty cobra type paint job.. http://www.pbase.com/image/1099505 |

Smarjoram,
The wheels are from a 993. I painted them black to gine the car that racer boy look.. they are the standard 7x17 front and 9x17 rear. they FILL out the sc flairs just right.. you'll love them. yep they require 1" spacers in the front and 2" spacers for the rear. Thanks for the kind words on the look of the car.. I to love the black and silver color. all the listed numbers should do you just right in putting some on your car aswell being a SC and all.. Good luck post a few pic's once you do it. cheers, Eric Mckenna 78SC |

Would I be right in thinking that 16" x 6" and 7" cup wheels would fit without spacers? I'm not really familiar with offsets and the like.
