My '83 sc just turned over 100k

I imagine some of you guys have past this milestone a LONG time ago. I think I might celebrate by ordering a 930 steering wheel upgrade. Question: what would YOU do to celebrate this, essentially, breaking in period??

///Criss 10-28-2013 05:53 PM

I think its going to fall apart so you should sell it to me!:D:D:D

crustychief 10-28-2013 06:28 PM

I got my 79 smogged Saturday at 196,000 still passes.

S2GART 10-28-2013 06:39 PM

Welcome to the century club. I bought mine with 119K on her but now has 148K.

dntlft 10-28-2013 06:51 PM

S2GART, thanks. I bought mine last November and I LOOK for reasons to go out for a drive, even if it's just a run to the store for milk. Got it with 95k miles... Now that it's hit 6 digit mileage, it can be considered a daily driver and not a garage queen, right?!
This is the first Porsche, hopefully of many, in my life.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...leys/2ar15.gif

Driving and good maint. is what the Dr. ordered. My '83 SC was going strong at 230k unopened when I swapped it out for an '83 euro motor.
I go for 'drives' that end up being 100-150 miles because I love the 911 experience, never tires me and am always sad to put it up.

Cooper911SC 10-28-2013 08:37 PM

Awesome! Keep driving it everyday. About to roll 312k on my '81. They go a long time!

mine is showing 266k....it would be nice to have been there for every one of them :)

zimmer266 10-29-2013 02:50 AM

Take a picture. Or a few pictures. Fill it and go for a drive.

A steering wheel would be fine. I have a Momo that I like.

livi 10-29-2013 03:42 AM

Celebrate?
You could clean completely the underside of the car including the engine. I mean, toothbrush stile. That will make her happy. :D

dntlft 10-29-2013 03:17 PM

Great ideas, all. This winter I intend to drop the engine for the first time to fix all oil leaks (is that even possible?), adjust valves and just generally inspect/repair as needed. I will certainly scrub and polish every facet of the gem that is the engine prior to reinstallation...
It may even tempt me to install SSI's and a M&K muffler to wake her up a bit:)

weseeeee 10-29-2013 03:59 PM

Congrats. I had to rebuild at 145K due to a few broken head studs.

Carl_Boehme 10-29-2013 04:11 PM

While you have the engine out inspect the CIS rubber for any cracks.
Our cars like to be driven. I drove my 83 to the store this afternoon, just because I like to drive it.

100k miles, 30 years... That's hardly enough to warrant an oil change once a year...

Tilikum Turbo 10-29-2013 10:28 PM

Change the oil...and never use aftermarket filters. 100K?...does not sound like that car has seen much of the light of day...

Also...always let the oil come up to operating temperature before you start to hammer it on the road...

I was thinking about seafoaming mine to clean out some of the lines... Any thoughts on seafoam?

Congratulations! I bought mine at around 240K, and she has a 930 wheel. I cringe a little when I see the stock SC wheel - the 930 wheel feels so perfect and I love it. Its a great upgrade.

My 1973 has 239,000 miles. Engine 129,000 and still perfect. I have driven it 120,000 in 13 years. Great car.

nicfranc 01-21-2014 08:00 AM

300,000 and running strong

+1 on the 930 Steering wheel.
If anyone has one for sale shoot me a message.

My 1980 US 911sc has 300k and the engine is unopened and top end is original.
Non pressure fed Chain tensioners and no pop-off valve.

Love this car.

GH85Carrera 01-21-2014 11:21 AM

Get that poor thing out and drive it more! ;)

See if you can get it up to 3,500 miles per year.

I just turned 150,000 miles on my 1985. So I have an average of 5,175 miles per year.

That's pretty good. The original owner for my car drove the wheels off it - 200K in the first 20 years. Its going to take me a while to get the average back that high again - Leland and Mike didn't have the time to run her 10K per year for that next 13 years.

dntlft 01-22-2014 03:41 PM

Holy *****, this thread is still going...
I haven't installed this steering wheel yet, got hit with higher insurance and taxes this go around, money flow had to go elsewhere.
As for mileage, I certainly intend to correct the previous owners apparent lack of enthusiasm. My first year of ownership saw >5000 miles put on this magnificent machine, and that included it being parked for more than 2 months as I tracked down ignition gremlins. I anticipate >6000 miles per year from here out!!

SC Love

i just love SC's, they're very responsive and i just love to roll the windows down and hear the car rev up thru the gears as i drive down my neighborhood. i can remember being a little kid in the early 80's and lusting over Porsche 911's... it was almost a pain in my heart that i was too poor and young to have one. i saved up and finally purchased an SC this month and i can say, i Love it just as much as my other toys... i'm so lucky to be able to have this car. i bought this car, with the intention on bringing it back slowly and having fun doing it, and i must say, it's saving me in the process, that's Love! this baby's got 175 K miles on it and i plan on adding many, many more...

here's a pic of my SC gettin' the good stuff. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1390441873.jpg

Who didn't like the 911 as a kid? I am amazed today how wide-eyed kids still gets when they see my car, SC Targa. I had a father and son stop me recently and the early teen kid said, "that's the one dad." You rarely see the SC on the road in my area....cant wait for the saltless roads this Spring.

r-mm 01-22-2014 06:45 PM

Just hit 100k? I give it 5k til the odometer gear snaps, ask me how I know =)

Ok also, drive it a lot. Great car and congrats.

dntlft 01-23-2014 06:31 PM

P924S, that's a beautiful color, Meteor Grey? The chrome rings on the H4's really set the right look for your car. My car is guards red, so chrome won't work on mine, but I do intend to eventually swap the original sugar scoop headlights for the cleaner look of the H4's, as on the Carrera models. Rings around the headlights will be painted body color.

dntlft 01-23-2014 06:35 PM

NoYouRelax,
My defining Porsche moment as a kid was when I lived in SC, our next door neighbor pulled into his drive with a new 911. I believe that was '76 or '77. My dad was an enthusiast and nearly had an aneurysm on the spot. "That is a REAL Porsche" was his only comment. That made a profound impression in my young mind.

dntlft 01-23-2014 06:39 PM

r-mm,
In retrospect, was there anything you could have done to prevent this? Shooting grease into the Odo/Speedo cable line? Is the repair relatively easy, or did you have to send it to a specialized shop for repair?
