how much tilt for lower valve cover seal change

Hi!
I want to change the lower valve cover seals and I've read that you can do it without draining the oil when tilting the car (first one side, fix, drop, then tilt to the other side).

true?
if yes, how much tilt is needed?
regular tire-lift-off-hight?
or more to "crazy high"?

and by the way, what do you think of of the reinz seals with that extra silicone line on it? makes sence. good choice?

Yup, I did it that way. Just used the regular tire changing jack point and put it up a modest amount. Wait a couple of minutes for the side to drain and your good.

I've tried all different style gaskets and have found the best result with the ones you describe on my '73

I have the silicone gaskets(orange). Jack it up to tire/rim removal height, didn't wait more than a couple minutes, valve adjust, and replace cover and gasket. With the soft silicone, the bolt torque pattern and amount must be respected. I tightened the pattern at least 4 times, and it is dry as a bone.

+2 for reinz w/ green silicone seal...the orange all silicone gaskets I found to be too susceptible to pinching the gasket and then u have a oil leak...too risky in my book = I had a car go for a 5 miles test loop and it was smokin like cheach & chong when it came back in the driveway... I looked under the car and the oil was a steady stream about 1/16 of an in in dia... popped the oil cp off, wipped the oil dip stick off, reinserted it and removed & it was dry...!!! OMG...WTF...it was full when it left for the test spin...stay with the oe ones or the reinz w/ the seal goop on them...my 2 cents...

This is why the multi retorquing is necessary, I have used these on airplanes also. Care is required, no doubt. These are reuseable that's their beauty, along with their sealing ability.

i just let the oil level get a little low and pull all the covers off and do it normally. never had any problems. fact i was going to do it last weekend but i hurt my finger so i put in 2 qrts and back on the road.

these cars hold 12-15 qrts. going dry on the dip stick is not a big deal. you did not over heat and you nver lost oil pressure.

also, i never fill mine up and i pretty much never pull the dip stick. as long as the gauge shows oil in the tank its all good.

ccb..if the reuseable silicone? gaskets were a more durable material i would use them...but as the orange ones are I will never use again...I understand what you are saying & the car cited did have non warped valve covers...

t77911s...I would never go dry on the dip stick...as the bottom of the oil tank is where the engine pulls oil from to go into the engine...if the tank is low or no oil on dip stick, the pump WILL be pulling air and oil and possibly no oil at times...not a good thing to be happening...

...back to the subject at hand...

ok, thanks everybody!

so I resume:
- tilting car to regular tire/wheel changing hight one side at a time
- torquing with 8 Nm, retorquing up to 10 Nm
- torquepattern is starting from the midle, crosswise
- using reinz seals with the silicone lining is good
