1972 911E vin question

Bought a 1972 911E targa, ran the vin numbers and it comes up as a coupe. The tag still has the factory rivets holding it on. Any ideas????

Check the other tags -- door, windshield pillar, chassis stamping. Hopefully they match. - Matt

What about the 'secret' one written under the dash??? (IIRC, it's hand written on the chassis under the dash on the right side, but my memory is vague at best)

The production # is stamped into the lower dash frame below the radio opening and hidden by the knee pad. The third digit is coded for coupe=0, targa=1 and Karmann coupe=2.

I have a bag of factory rivets, so I would not go with that theory.

There should also be a DOT Compliance Sticker on the driver door jamb with the VIN number as well.

Hopefully, you do not two halves of two cars!

On a side note, we have a 78-83 SC car at the shop right now that someone replaced the front clip on years ago at another shop and it shows a '72 VIN there and on the windshield. Cops came out and ran the VIN and its clean and the guy has a title for the car that says its a '72. So, we figure that either someone wrecked the original SC car and had a donor 72 car or more likely, wrecked the 72 and transferred the front clip and VIN plates over to the SC. Who knows?!

The vin on the pillar is 91122101xx, the tag in front is 91122001xx. I think it's a mis-stamp from the factory. They both end in the exact same 3 digits.

Please clarify for us.

The A pillar has a tag that reads 91122101xx.
The riveted tag in front, on the trunk latch bulkhead, reads 91122001xx.

What does the stamped VIN, located by the lower left corner of the smuggler's box, read?

Since the smuggler's box number is the same as the pillar number, then I would agree that the aluminum tag on the trunk bulkhead is a typo. You have two out of three VINs the same--indicating a targa--and one of those two is the number stamped into the sheet metal of the chassis which is the least likely place to have an error.

Yup, post some pics, unless you don't want to know if the tub may have had the vin swapped.

Well it is not the first mis-stamp I have come across. At least you have two out of three correct, and if the production # is for a targa, then it is three out of four. It should be fully documented though.
