I found HP & torque!

I bought a bi-pass pipe to put on until I do my rebuild and redo the exhaust next year. My CAT must have been plugged. I just installed the bi-pass pipe and OMG! I can’t wait to put on SSI exchangers now. I tried to shine a flashlight through the CAT and nothing, so I figure it must be clogged. I also adjusted out the 1” worth of missing throttle. The car sounds better and the torque is back. I took it for a test drive, redlined through the first 3 gears a couple times, and pulled back into the garage with a big smile on my face.

Why do they paint the bi-pass pipe? It took about 10 min for all of the paint to burn right off. Also, I assume that the CAT shield stays off w/ the bi-pass, seeing that I loose half the mounts. Is there a problem w/ not having the heat shield there?

Thought I’d share.

They pay somebody minimum wage to 'sort of ' paint the unit so it won't be covered in rust when you take it out of the box ... no other reason!

If you actually want it protected ... you are going to have to take it off, neutralize the rust with a 'conversion' coating compound based on phosphoric acid ... and paint it with Sperex VHT or Bar-b-que paint!

Thanks Warren, I thought it was a dumb reason like that. I'm not going to worry about it. I only plan to have it on for about six months anyway.

Oh Yeah, The second indication that my CAT was clogged was that as soon as I started it up, I walked past the exhaust pipe. I have never felt that much and that strong of air pouring out of the tail pipe! I'm all excited here and I still have my restrictive stock exchangers on.

Just wait 'til I do my rebuild! I plan on redoing the exhaust then w/ SSI exchanges. There are a lot of guys here in CA that have backdated exhaust or SSI's and pass fine. The trick is that the smog Nazis can't know what there are looking at or don't care. To truthfully answer your question "no" but I won’t have another smog until after the rebuild and I will keep the stock exhaust "just in case".
