Bipolar engine-fouling, gaps, plugs,msd=headache

Guys,

I have what appears to be a fouling issue and after literally hours of searching here can't quite determine what I need to sort this out so I could use a little help...

Engine Config- a 3.2ss, 46PMOs, single plugged, 9:5:1 JEs, dc40cams, Streetfire MSD, 3.2 heads, headers... other stuff too but probably not related. 600miles on it since the 3.2 build, not yet been to the dyno to dial in the carbs yet and it is running rich.

Symptoms The problem is that this engine is bipolar. One day it runs and pulls great and the very next it just makes a lot of noise but pulls like crap. The best way I can describe it is "muffled." Almost like I am in 3rd not first but I already went down that path and know I am not. Plugs are fouling daily so thinking that is the problem. Mostly carbon fouling though 1 plug per bank is usually wet with fuel. Timing was ok last time I checked it but I am going to take another look just in case. I already pulled the plugs and cleaned them up again so I don't have any plug reading pics right now.

Here are my specific questions that I *think* I need answering but the reason for this post is to determine if there is something else at play that I should be looking at as well.

Plug choice and Gap?--
1. I'm using NGK BPR6ES plugs but only gapped to .028. I'm thinking I need a bigger gap but not sure how big as a starting point. Seeing everything from .040 to .060 here but not sure where I should land.
2. Should I consider a different Spark plug for this application entirely?

Leaning out the carbs?
These things are running pretty rich and was wondering if there was any kind of a guide line starting point I could adjust the mixture and air screws to that would at least help the situation a little before getting to the dyno to do it right.

Beyond those questions I am open to suggestions. I don't know enough to know if I am asking for the right answers so please chime in with whatever you can think of.

thanks yet again!
