1983 911sc oil change

Hey Guys,

I have 83 911 sc. I was going to change the oil, but I don't have a sump plate or crankcase drain that I can see.

Do I just drain the oil tank?

I need help!

Thanks!

No. You have to take off the sump plate also. Then get yourself a Mainely Custom aluminum sump plate with drain plug. It comes with everything, including new studs, nuts and gaskets. Next time you won't have to remove the sump plate only the plug.

I'm sorry then. I must be wrong. (I have an 81 and it had a sump plate.) Have you searched the forum?

1983 did not have a sump plate, should be a bolt head on the left bottom side of the crankcase where you drain the rest of the engine oil. Should take a 15mm wrench. 1982 was the last year of the sump plate on the 911.

Yep, the one further ahead and on the bottom is the oil pressure relief valve plug. No need to remove that one.

Not true! Per Paul Frere ... the change occured in the spring of 1983 ... just before '83 SC production ended! The factory ran out of SC cases, the dies were worn out, so 3.2 Carrera cases were used earlier than planned!

My 83 has a build date of mid 82, it does have a sump, -google image for it and you should get a ton of pics,

-be sure to drain the engine and the oil tank, not one or the other, each holds quite a bit!

Have someone make a video of this.
We need to see your face when the tank drains in 3 seconds into the too small container.
Run for a 50 lbs bag of cat litter.
Ah, too late.

I think the point of the "sump talk" was to make sure he's looking at the right things!, not to play teacher, it was for me anyway!

-How many of us have a story to tell about the first Oil change on our 911?-likely most....so I think we're just trying to avoid one more thats all..

Thanks petrolblue,

I agree, usually I get very good info on this board, but it is also filled with people who enjoy showing everyone how much they know instead of being helpful. I would recommend the dorkiphus board, of which I am a member if you want help and not smart comments!!

Cool

Blah, blah, blah......................
Back to the business at hand.
I like the sump plate because it allows one to see if there are things on the screen like teeth, desintegrated chain ramps, etc.

We need to know the exact day, and hour, when the sump was discontinued in '83 so we can sleep nights.

That's why petrolblue and I mentioned the build dates, not because we were trying to be smarty pants.

The difference is that later on someone with a sump'ed 83 will stumble across this post and get all confused, and we'd have to explain it all over again... Would you leave an error in a shop manual unfixed?

My '83 has a build date of Oct. '82, it has a sump plate with a drain plug in it. If one had a sump plate, with out a drainplug, couldn't you tap one and make your own drain/drain plug set up?

How would someone be confused??, If they look under their car and see a sump with a drain plug, they know this is where they drain the oil. If not they look for the drain plug on the left side of the crankcase, all of which was explained early in the post. People keep chiming in with their 2 cents of knowledge which really makes no difference once the above statements about both drain locations were made. Most people are smart enough to deduce that it is either one or the other. The above comments about build dates are pointless once it was explained that the Porsche drain is either a sump plate or a drain on the lower left side of the case. ONE OR THE OTHER!!!

Obviously the first poster WAS confused. The first time I looked under my car the lack of sump plate freaked me out pretty good. My first reaction was to question the originality of the engine and subsequently, everything else about the car. Only later on I found out about the mid-83 on cars using Carrera cases. If we told all 83s had no sump then someone with a newly acquired 83 with a sump plate might go through the same thing as I did, and while harmless, it does make you feel really bad for a couple hours until you learn about the fact.

Besides, I *think* some people actually do care about the accuracy of information, and also *some* people can stand being corrected...

Now where's that picture about the special olympics...
