God help me I've bought an old Porsche

OK well the long wait is over. Bought my next door neighbors 84 911 RoW car. It shows 94 K on the clock, but that was after the conversion. Some mods, which I will figure out as I start learning the car.

Spent the day running to the bank and the DMV, on the phone with the insurance guys trying to explain why the vin has a bunch of ZZZ's in it.

Already bought the speed bleeders to flush the brake system, and free up the sticky caliper, but then again it doesn't seem to be dragging now. So a 19mm socket fits the lug nuts right?

Bought the leland bearing for the wobbly wheel. Came today, so tomorrow should be a busy day.

Today when I went to start it after giving my next door neighbor a big check, it wouldn't start, or idle. When I got it running every time I gunned it to keep it going the fan belt would squeal! God I'm glad my wife wasn't out in the yard to hear that. So I'm guessing it's fuel filter time. hope hope. It has only had about a hundred miles on it in the last few years.

Not a bad photo except for that large object in the corner.
I have already posted pics of the interior when I was looking at it. It's definitely in driver condition.

Maybe tomorrow my impressions as a first time Porsche owner.

Congratulations to your new hobby. You will have a lot of good times. And if you just do regular maintenace the car will reward you enormeously. If the fan belt squeels it needs to be tightened by changing the washers on the alternator shaft. Or better yet get a new fan belt, and get the right one right here at Pelican. And if the car only drove a few hundred miles in the last years I would change bot fuel filters. The fuel filter in the engine compartment and the one at the bottom of the tank. And also, of course, the oil and transmission fluids. It could be as simple as that. And, incidentally, there is no connection between a squeeling alternator belt and the fuel filter.

Right, but I thought it odd that as the engine tried to stall it would seem as if the alternator belt would suddenly get loaded up when I revved the engine.

I am waiting to learn the mysteries of getting the belt tension right by moving shims around.

It is quite simple with the shims. The fewer shims you put between the two pulley discs the tighter the belt gets. I would do it one shim at a time. Just be careful that the shims stay on the shaft and do not slip off when you put on the outside half of the pulley.

Also, don't pinch the belt between the pulley discs! If you do, you'll be changing the belt again when it breaks.

Your car is WPOZZZ because it is a RoW car. The cars all start out as WPOZZZ, but when it is supposed to come to the US the VIN changes to WPOxxx or whatever it is supposed to be.

BTW the squealing fan might be caused by some oil on it, if there is any leakage nearby. I had that problem, fixed the leak, new belt has not squealed in the years since.

Very nice... Love the year, and the color. The best color combination in my opinion. Ferraris and Porsches should only be red! With no rearview mirror, or speedometer.

There's a lot of interesting things about an 84. It has the best oil cooler ever made. Racers sometimes search high and low for it. Made one year, and one year only. We don't have power seats. Who needs em. The list goes on and on...

Let me save you some grief... Wrap the keys in a shop cloth, stick them in your pocket. Take another shop cloth and put it between the engine and the mount where the shims will DROP into oblivion if you don't catch them. Now they'll drop on the cloth that you stuff there and you'll easily retrieve them.

Next... Remove the cloth from the engine before you start it. If you forget - you still have the cloth wrapped around the keys jammed in your pocket to REMIND YOU TO TAKE THE ONE IN THE ENGINE BAY OUT!!!

This comes from someone who has started the engine and caught the cloth in the fan. Whatta mess - LOL!!

Enjoy the car, it's lovely!
