1985 Carrera speedometer problem

I had a shop remove the engine for repairs. Now the speedo doesn't work. Changed the sensor, sent the speedo head for a test. It was OK. Checked the wiring. Can the magnets be the problem? Tech says he didn't touch the transmission. I can run a magnet past the sensor and make the needle run up- seems to check the rest of the speedomter system.

What can go wrong in the transmission to cause this?

Can the magnets be removed without opening the transmission?

Hey folks. Success!
One of you guys pointed out (in another thread) that the sensor could be upside down. It was- the speedo works fine now after a year of fiddling with this. What happened is the mechanic had to remove the transmission to replace seals on the shift bar and in doing so, he removed the sensor and mounted it backwards. He did not touch the innards of the transmission as he said but, thanks to one of you, I tumbled to the cause.
This website really helps on these kind of problems.
Thanks much,
Virgil Young
