Post dwell meter

I read in the archives that the dwell meter should be connected (green connector on my Optilux) to the negative terminal of the coil. just wanted to confirm this as there is a warning label on my coil that suggests that a meter should not be connected to the coil. car starts and runs great. i just did the valve adjustment and wanted to check dwell angle. any help appreciated.
