Red face Excessive smoke at startup?

My 1977 911S smokes like crazy when cold after sitting for more than a few days. Seems worse the longer it has has been since it was started. Is there some sort of check valve the keeps the oil in the tank from running back into the sump? Seems to have become much worse since last oil change.
Help
Bob

Well if your level's good, I would pull the plugs and check them out. With some more info, I'm sure some of the experts around here could point you in the right direction. Start-up smoke is OK but you do say it's "Excessive". Does it smoke any other time? How much oil are you going through? How many miles? Was it ever rebuilt? Worn valve guides or piston rings maybe? Investigate further and post more info, the experts will chime in then.

I have noticed over the years that when I drive my 80SC on a daily basis I don't see any smoke at start up. When the car is left to sit in the garage for a period of time usually longer than a week I get a puff of blue smoke at start up. When the car has been left for more than 3 weeks it smokes for almost a minute. My engine only has 14k on my own rebuild. Since the engine is an opposing flat 6 cylinder oil will seep from the casing sump through the rings into the cylinders. Daily driving does not allow a significant build up of oil to notice any blue smoke. On the other hand if it is smoking all the time either you are overfilled with oil or your rings are shot.

Are you using synthetic oil? My 74 smoked on start up with synthetic but doesn't smoke with 20/50.

Sounds like it might be valve guides. How many miles are on the motor?
