Replacing 2.7 L with 3.0 L

Hi, have decided to swap my 2.7S motor for a 78 3.0L. My car is a 1977. I'm going to be doing the work mostly by myself(not a seasoned mechanic by no means) so I need a little help in some areas. First I believe the engine should mate to the 915 trans with little or no problems? Is the gearing the same? clutch and flywheel? Second, I am replacing the CD box with the 6 pin unit so that should be OK? The 14 pin connection is where i have questions, is this a direct switch? Or does rewiring have to be done. Also the tachometer, does anything have to be done electrically for that to work. Anyone that has ever done one of these, any tips or other areas of concern would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jerry

Jerry -

Do a search under the board name "Marcesq" and click the link in his signature to his engine swap page. A bunch of us recently helped him swap his 2.7 for a 3.2 and he has chronicled the process with a great home page.

I realize there will be some differences to your project but you'll find all kinds of great information there.

Good luck!

I did my own conversion from 2.7 to 3.0. There are a couple of guys doing this right now.

The main harness connector will mate without much modification. You only have to pull the tach feed out and splice it to you TD pin on the CDI box.

915 mates to 3.0 without modification.

Oil tank vent now runs to back of CIS boot.

Anything else, post it or e-mail me.

does one simply plug in to the lead and wire on the CD box with the black/purple wire to get the tach working?

You'll have to open the connector (possible, but be careful) and remove the pin/plug at the end of the wire. The connect that to the CDI.

I am lost in the translation. Do you essentially splice into the cdi wire and plug it back into the CD?

The pin you pull is actually wired into the CDI box via the connector, check with a multimeter and you'll see which one it is. Once you pull the pin, you'll have to connect it to the blk/purple tach wire. Probably my fault for not being clear. Hope this helps.
