SC on a diet - part 2 of 3
Last week the OEM steel hood was replaced by a MA Shaw F/G unit. Total savings was 22 lbs. This week I moved to the RUF style Yellow Bird CTR F/G front bumper cap. This registered a total weight savings of 48 lbs when all was said and done.
Before: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Front before.jpg Here is a pic of the back of the MA Shaw YB CTR bumper. Notice the flaps for mounting fog/driving lights. I will use these as an air inlet for my brake cooling kit. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...ack before.jpg Disassembly is straight forward. Everything comes off - bumper, front smile, valence, front spoiler, bumper shocks. Total weight of the assembly was 60 lbs. Notice the Carrera oil cooler that will soon be replaced by a B&B front mounted unit. Notice I moved the horns from the right to the left side. The OEM wiring harness is just tapped together. After removing the tape you just feed the wire through the left inner fender. I like this pic. Sort of like seeing you baby neeked. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/front apart.jpg Here are the fasteners I used that I picked up at the hardware store. Allen head bolts with a retainer that slipped right over the OEM mounting points for bumper assembly. Total used were 8, four in the center through the trunk and two on each side of the fender. After paint I will probably attach it at two more points where the front smile went. I only post this because I asked what other were using and came up with a variety of fastners. This is another option. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...ner bumper.jpg The completed front end. Except for paint of course. Luckily the MA Shaw parts come in black so the car doesn't look too bad during this process. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...nt after 1.jpg And front the front corner. Notice the difference in daylight. Total project took much longer than expected, about 7 hours. And this was without any mods to the F/G unit which bolted right up at the locations noted on the F/G piece itself. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...nt after 2.jpg Next week its Part 3, the rear bumper cap and true OEM sport two-straight-out-the back-muffler. Thus far, by stripping the complete AC, and a change in hood and front bumper the total weight savings are at 150 lbs. |
Looking good Paul! When are we going to get to see her in person. A quick drive before the BBQ on the 25th maybe? I have a lot of ideas running through my head since the last time we got together.

Looks like she is starting to ride up on that suspension :D Must be doing good work.

Looking good! I'm following your lead on the FG peices for my '73, though I won't save as much with my early bumpers. Here's an easy way to save another 44 lbs. These dry-cell batteries weigh in about 15.7 lbs vs the SC OEM at about 60 lbs! I'll be coming out with a fitted stainless hold-down clamp in a couple of weeks. |

Wish I lived in the US.. I gotta pursue other avenues. WRT the dry cell, I just had one stuck in (the trunk of) the BMW. It is very little and pretty cool. Pics will eventually come. I will investigate for the '69 too. Cam |
