1969 911 T Targa

Hi Guys,

I have a an 911 T targa from 1969 (2.0) (Italian import to Belgium) and when i checked the engine number there's something strange about it.

The crankcase number is 901/03 what is correct but the number on the engine is 6201951, and this should be a 619**** number.

I can't find a 620 number on a 901/03 crankcase, however on a 1970 911 /01 crankcase it exist.

Does anyone know what kind of engine this is ?

I think it is the right engine in the right car, but i really like to know what's with the odd engine number.

Can anyone help me out ?

Greetings,

Dirk

620001- 6292270 is a 70E coupe engine according to -The Porsche Family Tree (Bruce Anderson) published by PCA.
The good news is you have a 2.2 E engine and in US spec is 155HP vs the 69 @ 140

The type # is 901/03, and that is correct for your car. Is there another number stamped below the type #? If so what is it? That # would be the build #, and only used on 1969 and earlier 911 2.0 motors. So if it is there, then the engine case would be 1969 or earlier, and the 6201951 would be bogus. Another check is the casting part #'s on the lower sides of the engine case ending in 101.xR and 102.yR; what are x & y?

911T targa 1969

Hi Djpateman,

Finally found the time to take some pics.

What do you think ? Is it a 2.0 L engine or something that has been put together ?

Kind regards, Dirk

Dirk, the serial # 6201951 matches the case casting #'s 901.101.101.3R & 901.101.102.2R but neither matches the engine type # 901/03; the correct type # for that serial should be 911/01 and that would be a 1970 2.2 911E engine with green fan shroud and MFI, not carbs. Perhaps the induction and other components might give a clue as to what is inside.

If you are going to pull the engine then please get more photos. In my mind the type # is the incorrect stamping, but how it was stamped that way is a real mystery. All the engines in that era should be 911/xx, and not 901. There is no build #, so that indicates 1970 model year or later. As I said previously, you need to determine how the engine is built 2.0/2.2 , carbs/MFI and so on. What is inside the motor is more important than the #'s on the case now that the engine does not match the VIN. Please keep me posted.

Djpateman,

The owner has decided to sell the car, because it would cost to much to restore it properly.
I don't want to buy it because of the engine and a lot of other parts that are not correct for this car, not to mention the poor state of the bodywork.
I also found out that the number 901/03 is put in afterwords, they grinded the old 911/01 away and put the 901/03 in place.
And if you look at the picture you can see the numbers are not well lined and they are to big to. So it is probably a 2.2 E engine where they put carbs on.
Thanks for the help
