Weak eng cover spring

I have an 84 with not just a Tea Tray tail, but also it has the A/C condenser in the tail. The resulting weight is too much for the release spring. When I pull the release, you have to have a second person lift at the same time to get it to release.

I have tried stretching the spring a bit, with no luck. Is there a way to install a double spring or a newer stronger one? I don't expect miracles like having the cover jump up, or even for the poor hyd struts to work, I just need to get in the engine compartment by my self.

Try realigning the spring latch... guessing that it's binding a little.

The spring is strong enough to pop it up, even with the tail and condenser (light weight).
