Really? where did the thread go?
So I started a thread asking about whether or not I should rebuild the CV joints on my 81 911sc and now its just gone? any idea what happened? I thought threads couldn't be deleted..? I was getting some serious help and now its all gone :confused:
anyway... guess its time to start over... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1385062558.jpg 81 engine going into a 78 body, cv joints fell off on the transmission side when I took them off.. getting new bolts and schooner (?) washers... I'd really like to know what happened to that thread :( It wasn't a great thread but it was helping me out. |

Sorry to hear about the thread.
CV joints are a very (extremely) messy job. You are replacing the bolts and washers (good) and you're going to want to clean the CV joint, the balls that fell when it came off the trans and inspect. What you're looking for is any pitting on any of the contact surfaces - if it is pitted, buy a new CV joint. There are a couple guys here who suggest that the investment in time is not worth while to clean, repair and re-pack the CV joints, and re-install and they buy the whole CV shaft and install as a unit. If you're going to clean, inspect, and re-pack these CV joints: I have the following suggestions: invest in nitrile gloves. put newspaper or butcher paper (two or more layers) on your work surface have no fewer than 2 rolls of paper towel or shop towels available. This in addition to having your circlip plyers ready - and a couple fresh brews ready - while you're working. After I packed the CV joints and got them "car ready" I put zip-ties through the mounting holes to hold them together to the boots, and put them in trash bags and set them aside. You may want to wear your disposable clothes as well. |

irl - it was more of a 'this is my plan, am I an idiot?' haha but yes.
Robey - the comment that was bugging me was they fell off therefore replace them. I'm not concerned about the work involved or the mess, just whether or not I'm going to regret saveing that extra $300 or so on the rebuild kits. |

The thread? There was some junk on the site and maybe they inadvertently deleted your thread. I had posted a link to this utube video that someone on the forum had post several months ago. Not sure if you saw it. Rebuilding CV joints - part 1 - YouTube There are 2 parts to the video and they are very informative. It really is not that hard, I did it a couple months ago. I believe the mostbiggest benefit I obtained was the insight as to what was a good part versus a bad part. What needed to be replaced. Good luck Bob |

the vast majority of joints that old are divoted and pitted, therefore not really reuseable. complete new axles are the way to go.

ok, my joints are garbage... so new axles it is.. $243 isn't *that* bad, I guess.. its time to learn these cars aren't cheap. (I should have realized that when I had to buy a whole new chassis). Anyway I appreciate the assistance :)
