Rolling car without drive axles?
 

Is it okay to roll the 911 (86 Carrera) without the stub axles installed in the trailing arms? A friend recalls that front drivers of similar setup (big lock nut holding shaft in housing) are not supposed to be rolled without the axles in place.

Will this hurt the wheel bearings? The car would only be rolled (without the motor) a couple hundred feet down to the garage and back again.

This is not a good idea. THe reason is because the rear bearing is designed only to be operated when the stub axle is in and the nut is compressing the races of the bearing. Can you put the stub axle in and tighten the nut a bit?

We can roll the car with the axles in without a problem. I just thought it'd be easier to take the axles out, instead of tying them up with wire and hoping they don't slip down.

Just trying to avoid tearing the axle boots. I did that last year on my car by letting them hang down (didn't roll the car). Replacing the boots and repacking is a messy mess.

I mant just put in the stub axles, not the whole thing with the CV joints. Maybe they don't disconnect on your model.

When I need to move a 911 around w/out the motor I leave the axles in and "tie them up" by making a tube out of cardboard that wraps around both inner CV joint. Then I tie the tube up so the axles are level. The CV's just spin in the tube when you move the car. -Chris

That's right, the CV's are welded to the axle shaft at the trailing arm end. They're not bolted at both ends like the earlier models.

I know the kind of sub axle/CV setup you're talking about. If you ever have to replace the outer CV joints, just keep the stub axle piece for this purpose.
