What's this chip in my 87's brain?
I opened up the brain in my 911 to find a chip that looks aftermarket. ST is a company that still exists, but I can't find any mention of this chip on their website. I search for all the combinations of numbers that appear on the chip and still no dice. Does anyone know what I'm dealing with here?

Look for the sticker that fell off. I foung the super old Autothority sticker loose inside the ecu. Similar looking chip but 28 pin in my 87.

Be careful, if exposed long enough to direct sunlight or an intense UV light EPROMS can be erased. You want a sticker or something covering the glass window on the chip while you have the ECU cover off.

So perhaps ST just manufactured this chip for another company like Autothority? That makes sense. In any case, I'm going to replace it with a Steve Wong over the winter. Thanks for the tip about the sticker jrumiano, I had no idea!

it is (or was) a very common 2732 EPROM (erasable programmable read only memory). 32k bits = 4k bytes. Later DME's use 8k EPROM's that are 28 pin devices.
This EPROM, along with some memory inside the 8051 CPU, holds the software code + data that run the engine. The later 8k chips hold it all in one place. Earlier boards can be converted to 8k boards. There is a site, I think FR Wilk? that has a lot of DME information, worth reading. Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 369k miles, lots of custom DME software. |
