Picture the scene!
Nice summer evening. No traffic on my favourite stretch of twisty country road. Drove the 15 miles or so pretty quickly, keeping the revs above 3000, with the sun roof open. The wonderful noise above 4000 revs giving me goose bumps. I had always thought this my favourite Porsche sound. But when I arrived home, parked the car in the garage and stepped out the car, there was that strangely satisfying sound of cooling metal. Almost as if the car is saying "thanks"! What's your favourite?

I've gotta say that my car revving at 5000+ while traveling under a long overpass is pretty damn sweet, especially with the Borla. The echo is amazing. I'll never get sick of that. Even a blip if I can't stretch the revs. is a great sound.
ciao,

The turbocharger spooling up to 80,000 rpm....
until the wastegate opens and the sound of raw exhaust drowns everything else out. It's half the reason to own a turbo. JP

The best 911 sound I have ever heard:
Former employer's RSR twin-plug slide-valve monster-of-a-motor with headers and megaphones. The percussion of the thing starting up was enough to make you pee your pants. It got even better as the revs increased! Also, much more subtle, but equally enjoyable: The sound of a 911 door opening and closing. I love it! |

Tunnels definitely.
In fact only last night I went through the mile long Dartford Tunnel (goes under the River Thames in London), the sound was fantastic! I had the Targa top off and nearly choked to death (lotsa fumes), but it was well worth it. My brother-in-law was about 1/2 mile behind me in his newly aquired Triumph Stag and he said he could hear me in there!Cheers, Tim. ____________ 1983 SC Targa Last edited by AirCooledExcellence; 08-23-2002 at 01:40 AM.. |

Cruising top down, listening to the turbocharged flat6's crescendo as the KKK spools up to that magical explosion at 3000rpm's as she roars savagely to the 7200 rpm limit, exhaling a quick burst of compressed air during each shift
![]() Hmmmm... makes me wanna go for a cruise right NOW

It is not on the list, but the best sound is hearing those fuel pumps kick in before the symphony starts in back of your head. It is all about the foreplay.

Of course I like the sounds over 4000 arps (and the effects...) but I equally like the jetlike whirring of the turbine just behind my ears, whilst cruising at 100+ mph (only in Germany, naturellement!). Sweet and soft, 'at is!

My favorite is the sound of a 911 pulling away from a stop sign. It's that hollow, whirling, screaming sound. 3.2s, SCs, 2.7s. 2.4s, 2.2s all have it.
I don't know what contributes most -- the fan, HO configuration, ? -- but I find it greatly diminished in the 964s and 993s and gone completely in the Boxsters and 996s. From my backyard I can tell if one has pulled away from the stop sign in front of my house. The sound of the other cars is inaudible it's so far away. |

actually the sound you hear when you turn the engine off on this nice summer evening is the engine getting hotter (no cooling fan) this is a horrible time for the engine.
roland kunz referred to it as "the killing field" think of that the next time you hear those noises.
