1973.5 Fuel Venting Hose Material
I am in the process of restoration of a 1973.5 911 Targa. Working on hose replacement and wondering if the vinyl tubing that was with this car for venting purpose was correct. Any thoughts in this regard would be appreciated.

I have a 73.5 all stripped at the moment but I did remove those tubes. If I can find a picture pre-demo of them I'll post it for you as a reference.

That appears to be the original hose used for the venting and emissions system. If you replace it make sure the line used is rated for fuel. As yoou see they get yellow and brittle over the years.

You can also use fuel rated rubber hose for this application. You can buy clear vinyl fuel rated hose for industrial supply houses like McMaster Carr (McMaster-Carr).

There is some confusing information about this on the McMaster-Carr site.
If you search for clear tubing, and narrow the search using the filters on the left side of the screen, filtering for use with gasoline produces two options for Tygon PVC tubing. One is ultra chemical resistant clear and the other is fuel and lubricant yellow. If you then click on the link labeled 'chemical compatibility of PVC tubing' it shows the clear tygon as specifically not recommended for gasoline. Only the yellow is shown as recommended for gasoline -- which is a bummer. I'm currently using the yellow, but I don't like the looks of it at all. If anyone finds a source for gasoline compatible clear, please post it here. Thanks.

FWIW, about 8 years ago I put in clear PVC from the local hardware store (I had a catastrophic failure of a vapor line and needed to do something quick). I am still running the same lines with no leaks or issues. Since they see only fuel vapors, I think the "Ordinary" PVC is adequate but not ideal. At some point, I will need to replace them again.
