Question for those with stock Silver window trim

Hey All,

I have a 1978 911SC that has silver (not chrome but polished) window trim around the side windows. It is black on the inside.

I had someone tell me that since it is black on the inside that a previous owner had probably just polished the outside edges or it had faded?

Recently I was looking at some pics or video (honestly I can't recall) of an earlier car with silver trim and it also seemed to be black on the inside. I am just wondering if someone can confirm that the inside should be silver as well ?

Thanks

Mine is silver, both sides.

your trim is faded as it should either be black on both sides, or bright aluminum on both sides. A p.o. might have polished the outside if its gloss shine

Mine is bright on the inside and black on the outside. I am in the process of removing the black. It's still shiny under there.

My '74 is polished silver aluminum inside and out.

should be the same inside and out whether it's black or bright

My 74 Targa is a combination of bright trim. The Targa bar is brushed stainless. The windshield trim and the targa window trim that sits in the rubber is aluminum. The vent windows, door tops (exterior), targa to body trim, headlight bezels (original sugar scoops no longer on the car. It now has painted H4's) were all chromed plated.

I'm assuming when you say the interior you are referring to the vent window interior? If so mine are chrome.

My '77 had the black trim removed by one of the previous owners. At first it did not really bother me. I then began to dislike it. Last year I went to the Hershey Pa. swap meet and could not find decent trim pieces. I called the dealers and $$$$$hit they are expensive. I resigned myself that I was going to live with the "silver" trim.
Well, one day I hunted around on the internet and found a solution. I googled and found Duplicolour demonstrating the process of painting trim. The next day I began cleaning and masking my trim and painted it black. It took me almost all week - a few hours a day - and I think I did a pretty good job! The paint has a bit of a satin finish and I just took my time. I primered everything first so the black trim finish would adhere better to the metal. The car just pops now when you look at it! The comments from people were "did you paint the car it looks so much better now".

I found spots where the P/O could not reach with whatever product to remove the black paint (I think it was anodized by the factory).

While I had to take some of it apart I replaced a lot of the rubber around windows, sills, etc... I picked up most of the bits from our host.

Durability was one of my issues. Well, using a primer to etch the metal helped as well as spending a lot of time cleaning it with alcohol. Some touch ups were needed as my masking was not the best but I learned as I went along. I have put on a lot of miles since the work and no chipping or peeling on any of the trim I refinished. (including washing with a power washer) I did try to scratch it to test the durability and it took quite a bit to mark it! I think one of the P/Os used a scrubby pad - you can see the light scratches but thos filled in nicely with the primer and paint!

I have not taken a photo of the finish product yet but I will look after that once she come out of hibernation. Our first snow fall and we got 3 cms. with minus 12 C. temps.
