Another impact bumper removal question

I couldn't find the answer to this after searching the forum. To remove the rear impact bumper from the vehicle, is removing the rear wheels necessary?

Vic,

There are several ways to remove your bumper:
a). Remove the bumper rubber strips and loosen the nuts holding the bumper to the bumper shocks.
b). Or remove the rear bumper shocks with the bumper assembly.

No need to remove the rear tires. And don't forget to detach the license tag lights connections.

Tony

It is easiest to raise the rear and remove the tires as you need to remove the right rear bumper shock one way or another and access is blocked by the oil tank. The best approach is to use a universal joint and extension on a ratchet, snaking it around the tank to access the single nut on the front end of the shock. I would remove the rear wheels as it takes all of five minutes and probably saves ten. I just did mine a few weeks ago. Remove a few bolts connecting the bumper extensions to the quarter panels, remove four bolts from the extension braces, unplug the two license plate lights, remove the single nuts retaining the bumper shocks, and pull off the bumper. The problem with removing the rubber strip and then two nuts on each side is that often these nuts are rusted solid as the rubber strip traps moisture. Good luck!

You don't need to remove the bumper shock on the right side to remove the bumper.

impact bumper

As JR said, I did not remove rear tires when I removed my impact bumpers. I just removed the ones encircled. Do not forget to remove the license plate lights as the housing flew in mine and had to buy a new set.

Apologize for the hijack but do you need to remove the bumper to replace the black trim between it and the tail lights.
