Bosch Starter

I have had a couple of occasions where my starter gave the oft referred to 'clunk' and then started the motor with some clatter. The engine then runs perfectly. I re-did and even added to the chassis earth connections in a couple of places and then, after no real improvement (it did spin faster), removed the starter. I benchtested the starter, bypassing the solenoid, with a battery and it did not spin but the pinion/shaft popped out but did not retract. I also checked the ring gear on the flywheel with a light and mirror - turning the engine. All seemed fine there. In dismantling the starter (below) I am not sure about what appears to be a bearing on the shaft between the pinion and the clutch mechanism. Should this turn freely? It turns a somewhat tightly - one way only. Is this correct? I believe that it is. Bushes seem fine and also the armature.

I re-assembled the starter after a good clean up, new thrust washers and so on and a check over electrically. The pinion shaft now pops out and sometimes returns when triggered. It does not fully retract however. But I would think the starter should spin! It obviously does on the car but maybe the pinion shaft was staying half out and causing that rattle against the flywheel?

The starter in there now is a Bosch (remanufactured) 003911023A.

Any ideas welcomed please. Seems like a new starter is the order of the day. Or can these be re-built?

These two photos show the pinion when pushed in and after triggering - and only half retracting.

The thing that looks like a bearing is a one way clutch.
It's there to prevent over-run of the starter if you hold on to the key too long.
It should slip easily in one direction...and lock tight in the other.
Other than that...clean and lube (lightly) all the bearing surfaces...but keep the clutch clean...no lube....you don't want it slipping when starting the engine.

Thanks Bob. The clutch is clean and works I believe. Relatively easy to turn one way and locks the other. Wondering why the pinion shaft won't fully retract. Have reassembled a few times and can't see why

The solenoid spring is very good and its fires well. I suspect that it is the other bigger spring in the Bendix system. I thought that this might have been a problem for others as well - maybe not?

Found an SR17X via VW and Porsche specialist locally. Was about to give up and order from the US. Many thanks for the advice.
