Update: Sheetmetal fabrication of turbo flare extension for early fenders

A few people have asked about this in the past. The steel front turbo flares on the market today are only for short-hood models; the wheel well on pre-74 fenders requires the fabrication of a small extension piece. I finally got around to doing this and here are the results of the fabrication. Click below to link to my page; from the main page there's a link straight to the fabrication. In an upcoming update, we'll see how how this piece is grafted to the flare along the piece's top edge. In a third update, we'll see how the bottom edge is finished off and blended to the line of the bumper.

Thanks to those who have been waiting a while- I know I said something about last fall...sorry about the looooong delay!

those extensions look great. I guess you will bring them up next week with the fenders for installation. Gentlemen, start you welders... I guess its a good thing I have been getting lots of practice on those rockers.

Dave, nice job on the extensions. I'm considering the same procedure for rear stock bumper on a 73 to match the RS flares I just welded on. I can get the factory units but at over 1,000 bucks I can do a lot of fabricating....

here's the rear, all metal bumper on my 73 speedster conversion. original corners grafted to sc extensions, the center piece of a front bumper, and sheet metal under it to cover the monty turbo muffler.

I would love to see the final product!!

Also I would be curious if you would be willing to do this procedure for a nominal fee....

I will stay tuned...

John, now I'm sure I want to stay with steel for the rear bumpers.
If you were doing the RS flare extension (rear) would you start with SC extensions welded onto the factory bumpers?

John,
Thanks for the pics man - those jobs are really nice. The front bumper section as a starting point for that rear bumper gives it a really clean and custom look. Nice!!

82SC - I'd do it no problem, but the kicker is having the whole car at hand. This is needed to do blend the extensions to the bumper. Seeing as you are in LA this is probably not feasible. You might be able to work something out with Mr. Walker though.

Gibson - I'm also interested to hear about doing the rear- I am actually just doing fiberglass bumpers front and rear, I figure it won't be too hard to make them look nice. Fenders are supposed to be much harder to finish, which is why I went with steel.

The next update shouldn't take a year this time- I'm going to be up in DC on business for the next 4 weeks and will be pressing Jamie into service for the welding

-d
