'88 911 Engine Cutout
I was perusing the PCA website and found a post in their Q&A section. This post outlines the EXACT problem I am experiencing on my stock '88 911 3.2 engine. I've replaced the plugs, the wires (Magnecor), the DME relay, the distributor cap and rotor. Nothing has worked. If you wrote this post on PCA's website, please let me know what your resolution was. Here's what the PCA post had to say:
I own a 1988 Carrera that has been experiencing several intermittent rough running problems that may or may not be related: + While driving, the engine will intermittently cut-out for an instant. Lose all power--then it's back--causing the obvious big lurch! This has happened when the car is not fully warmed up as well as when it has been completely warmed up. Usually it has only been one blip at a time, but more recently, the engine launched into a series these cutouts that caused violent bucking. After pulling over and restarting, the car did the same thing several more times. Anything more than a gentle, feathered throttle would cause lots of bucking. If too much throttle was applied, the engine would die. After several restarts, and feathering the throttle down the street for a ways, it finally smoothed out. +Occasionally when at a stop, the engine will rev up and down on its own, some times followed by an increase of 1000-2200 rpm--then a stall. The car will always restart after these episodes. Here's what we have done to help solve the problem: +Replaced the DME relay +Replaced the fuel pump +Replaced cylinder head temp, sensor +Cleaned flywheel pickup points Early on in this process (its been going on for quite awhile) we also replaced one of the injectors that was suspect. Since these problems have been intermittent, it has not been the easiest thing to track down, but it happens often enough to be a real nuisance! Any suggestions? |

It reads like the problems TazerD is having on her thread.

I found the little bugger!! I posted this same reply to TazerD:
I was looking for vacuum leaks, loose connections, etc. - and I stumbled across a four-pronged connector (it resembles the type of connector on the DME relay) that sits directly behind the drivers-side intake manifold. As I picked up the wire to this connector, the bottom part of the connector fell away. Ah ha! I found my loose connection! I plugged the connectors back together and viola! My baby was back to its old self! No more hesitation or misses! Thanks for the help guys! ![]() |

The male connector was the connector I had in my hand. The female connector was the one that fell away. What the connector is exactly, I don't know. It is a four-prong connector that looks very much like the DME relay. That's all I can tell you. Maybe someone else reading this post can tell you what the connectors are for. Sorry....
