Any Maryland Pelicans out there? Have a vehicle purchasing question.

Apologies for the non-Porsche content, but this may help someone here who happens to be in the same situation as far as making an out of state purchase that involves MD and shipping the car to their state of residence.

Wife has found a car that she likes at an MD dealer. Plan is to ship the car to Colorado and then register and pay taxes here.

I've checked out the Maryland DOT webpages, and haven't been able to find any info regarding this"out of state buyer" scenario as far as MD taxes, etc.

Would Maryland require any sales tax, temp title or other "registration" or fees to be paid? My gut says no, and as long as the car has all proper documentation, we can have it shipped and then pay all taxes, fees, etc. in Colorado.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Maryland Taxes

Maryland only charges a title tax when you get a Maryland title. If the dealer is requiring you to get a Maryland title before taking possession, you will need to pay the 6% title tax on the value of the car. You should ask the dealer whether this is required.

Some states will give you credit for title taxes paid to other states. That would be a question for Colorado.

I work at a Mercedes Benz dealer in Bethesda Maryland and have many clients that live in VA, D.C. and PA. Taxes are paid according to the % of the state of residence. In our tag & title dept. we will do the registrations for Virginia and the District of Columbia which includes everything related to the purchase including collecting the sales tax but not Pennsylvania. Those folks will take their paperwork to the PA DMV and have their own registration & tag work completed. They are responsible to pay their own sales tax on the car when they register it. Definitely check with your DMV on how they handle out of state purchases and with the selling dealer. Best of luck to you.
