MSD Programmable 6AL-2 to Computer Communication Issues
 

I've had this in the 930 section but haven't found any help with this issue.

I have the programmable 6AL-2 (Model 6530) installed and operating in place of the factory CDI and it's working just fine in that application. However, I'd like to go ahead and lock the distributor so I can download some timing and boost curves. Problem is, no matter what I try I can't get a computer to recognize the MSD box - no communication.

The 6AL-2 uses a (used to be) standard female 9 pin serial connection, and MSD provides a male-by-female 9 pin cable. So the user plugs the male end of the cable into the MSD box and then ... oops. They're left holding the female end of the 9 pin serial cable but looking at the 15 pin VGA and USB connections on their laptop. I have one Mac and three PC laptops and nary a one has a spot into which one can plug the female end of the cable provided by MSD. So, three different adapters later - the most recent of which is the brand and model recommended by MSD - and I still have no communication between the 6AL-2 and any of the laptops. Sure glad it's the four day Thanksgiving weekend so there's no one to talk to at MSD.

If anyone here has experienced this issue and successfully figured it out I could sure use some help.

i think you need a serial to usb connector like this Amazon.com: USB to Serial RS-232 DB9 Adapter Cable: Computers & Accessories

It sounds like you have a few serial to usb adapters you are trying. These have always been tricky getting to work with similar applications such as aftermarket ECUs.
Go to the adapter manufact. website and download the latest driver.

Make sure your MSD system has power when trying to connect.

Go to the MSD website and see if they have a FAQ section on connecting with their preference adapter.

Last, "Google" search serial to usb converter connection problems. You will get there.

Find an old laptop with a serial port. I sure love mine, even bought a second one as a spare for parts.
A 2003 Dell Inspiron 8500 running win7 is what I use.
They can be found fairly cheap on eBay...
Just checked, there are a few with and without an OS installed.
I've never had any luck with the USB to serial cards.
