Angry DC Automotive

Beware!

In my restoration project I needed a chrome-plated hinge for one of the rear side pop-out windows as mine was broken. The only place I could find one was from DC Automotive, a Porsche re-cycler. The cost was $100 plus shipping, but what the heck, all this stuff is spendy isn't it?!! So the package arrives and the hinge looked like it was stored in salt water for a decade or so, all pitted and corroded. I've tried to email them with no response; perhaps the Thanksgiving holiday had something to do with that. But a word to the wise, be careful; over priced and of very poor quality.

I probably can have someone here in the area polish this thing down and re-chrome it.

Tom

Don't mean to start an argument, just thinking DC needs a break here. I've had many dealings with Robert at DC automotive over the years and with several different Porsches and have never had a problem. Since you don't mention the time period you have been trying to reach them I'll assume you probably got the part just prior to the holiday? I think one ought to at least give the guy a chance to respond to your dissatisfaction directly during their stated business hours. Being that the time period was over a major holiday when most business are closed I would suggest getting in touch with them Monday when they can respond.

In general I've always asked the condition of a particular part or even requested pictures so there's not ambiguity or disappointment. Personally, I think this is more the take away here.
Believe me, we've all experienced your frustration.
If a concours part is required, I have found that is important info a supplier would need to know. On the other hand, I think if the part is as described they should have mentioned it's condition. Perhaps getting ready for the 4 day holiday someone slipped up or didn't know a better part was expected?

Although these parts don't look as though it sat in water for twenty years they are pitted, but complete and would also need to be re-plated. Apparently $100 isn't so out of line. Maybe these are a better option for you? (no affiliation).

Just say'n.
Good luck with the project!

Another pro instead of a con here…

I bought a footwell blower from DC. It was noisy as hell. Fan was hitting the outside of the unit. Called, spoke to the guy, had a good conversation. He sent me another one free of charge and told me to keep the one he had already sent.

That's damn good of a recycler, no?

Nick

Made good for me on a part I received that was an interior piece warped and waterlogged. The problem is the redo.

Same thing here. Ordered some window trim and they accidentally sent the wrong part number. A simple phone call and they sent the correct part and told me to keep the one they already sent.

It was Thanksgiving week. Give them a chance and they'll make it right.

Thanks for the opinions. I'll give them another chance tomorrow.

Had the same thing happen with a turbo decklid hinge (I sent the NA one back anyway, had no use for it and figured it was good karma).

I've been very happy with the (NLA from Pelican or the stealer) parts I've bought from them.

seems to be a trend.

they send out crap the first time, if the buyer keeps it, good for them, if not, all they have lost is a part they would through away.

i new a used volvo salesman, (his dealer ship) that sold "very nice" even low miles volvos.
i always got a kick out his comments about how fabulous or wonderfull his cars where. (dont remember the exact phrase). when i would drive them, i could easily find things wrong like it might pull to one side, or there is a vibration. another one was the AC would not blow out of the correct vents which ment a dash removal.
i always thought his plan was that if the buyer did not notice, good for him, if they did, he was always happy to fix it.
