Bah.

Stefan Roser didn't go into the dirt and over the rumblestrips on every corner. Those guys may be sideways a lot, but they don't do it over 100mph, 5 feet from the Armco barrier.

Errr......aaaaahhhh....ummm no!

Those guys suck. All that wheel spin might please the crowd but it doesn't get them around the track fast. I could probably beat them on my bicycle.

stuttgart 08-23-2002 07:18 PM

You're right Tom... Stephan is the MAN!!!!!! i do NOT dout that!!;) ... I have Lap 1 & Lap 2 saved to desk top,, I watch them all the time.. but these guy's are not too shabby!!! lot's of power helps out i am sure with the drifting... I did a bit of myself comming home tonight in the rain.... the kid in the back seat of his moms van LOVED it he was all smiles and waving at me when the pulled up next to me at the next light.. I'd have to assume (hope?) that is one of those "drift contests"...

I would sure hate to see those guys' tire bills.

Emission 08-23-2002 10:42 PM

I think the drifting was the point of the exercise. I didn't see anything that led me to believe those guys were trying to get around the track in a hurry.

Now, on the other hand, those cars have some serious horsepower to be able to light the wheels up like that. Most looked like they were running the 3.0 Toyota Inline-6 (Lexus SC300, Toyota Supra, Lexus IS300....). They are easily turbocharged to amazing levels of power!

andyu911 08-23-2002 11:16 PM

Drifting is very popular in Japan and is heating up here in So. Cal. also. It's one of those exercise for car control. I take my old school Rwd Corolla to the tracks for drifting events once a while. Different experience from my Carrera. It's a lot of fun. With smaller power car, it's not as easy as high output one to kick the tail out. Yes, tire wear is very quick, but all weather tires are all I use.;)

For those young gearheads with more testosterone than money, the rice projects are perfect. Those are some screamin' beasts they are driving. More power to 'em! :)

I'm certainly not impressed. Nice mountain scenery of Japan though...

Actually those guys are good. Most people can't do a controlled 4 wheel drift thru one corner, let alone around a complete track. Drifting may not be to your liking,(It's not my thing) but it does require more then a little bit of skill. It's actually getting popular in Europe as well and the Porsches do pretty good.

BKOMAR 08-25-2002 08:47 AM

I must say.....I definitely like the sound of those things.... and you have to have at least SOME admiration for the effort put out in making those monsters. As for the comment about more testosterone than $$... I cant afford an IS300 that is for sure....there is some serious cash invested in those cars. I am regularly amazed at the amount of time, money and "love" put into some of our Porsches... going to DE's and shows... these guys (ricers) would be saying "why would anyone put all that time into a car that only puts out 180 (or 240*grin*) HP and is 20+ years old. I have seen guys at DE's that baby their "average" cars and think they are just as nice and worth as much as a Deusenberg or Bugatti. I love my car(s) just as much as anyone.... but I also am intrigued and admire the technology that the ricers are employing. Sure, some of the stuff they put on their cars are silly and nearly any bystander would think my early turbo tail was silly and not necessary, but it is still neat car stuff... and I can't get enough of it! Just my thoughts, Brian

stuttgart 08-25-2002 09:13 AM

Brian ,
I wgree with you guys.. I don't really care for the rice cars all that nuch but they are in a way just like us... only they have a fondness for another marque. but they are decent .. hell GOOD drivers to do that and harnes that power the way they do. he is a link... it was shown to me by my "RICER" house mate  hahaha he loves the things.. he is a subaru lover:rolleyes: i think we fight at least once a day! hahahaha I an still healing a black eye! from our last car conversatoin;) :D hahaha but you may like all the videos and stuff you should look at the Skyline videos that thing is a MONSTER:eek:

'Drift Racing' is news to me. It looks just plain silly. And how is the winner determined? Do you get points for how much tire smoke or how far you carry a drift or what? Reminds me of freestyle skiing where the winner is chosen by subjective judging, rather than the ruthlessness of a clock.

Noah, I'm with you. We used to go out in large snow-covered parking lots and do that kind of stuff all the time! -- Curt

MMARSH 08-25-2002 01:45 PM

Curt, your right, a snow covered parking lot is the same thing. Maybe you and Noah both have a calling for FIA world rally and didnt know it.
