Calif DME car question

awhile back there was a thread about how california cars had a brown wire that ran along side the main wire bundle going into the the DME box and that if you disconnect it the car behaves like a 49 st. i've done this without any apparent problem but i'm still concerned because of terms like 'sub audible detonation'. Has there been any follow up to the original post? Anyone dyno their car with the brn wire connected/disconnected? Tia.

Ps. car is an '86
