87 Targa Cylinder Head

Greetings and Happy Thanksgiving,
I have been hanging around on this site for a while but mostly on the 951 site. I bought a 1987 911 Targa, 118,000 miles, a few months ago so here I am enjoying all the 911 info. Pic attached.

I have also had to pull the engine already but I was anticipating this as a possibility. I bought it knowing the #6 cylinder head had been time-serted for the spark plug. First day on the track the plug worked its way out. The time-sert did not hold. The plus was in the insert and the insert had worked itself loose. Rather than risking it happening again next summer I decided to do this right and replace the head.

So my questions are:
What is the going rate for a used head these days? I see what I can get one from Pelican and some of the others online? I am looking for other options and if anyone has a head in good condition for sale please let me know.

Secondly, what would you anticipate labor cost to be to R&R the head. I pulled the motor, separated the transmission and took it to a shop. I am waiting for an estimate back I wanted some input what you might expect this to cost me.

The guys that do this for a living or have done it for a living will know.

Given you essentially put it on their bench and you only want the head replaced. I "feel" about eight hours labor but I have no real clue. Have the cams timed as a set.

Here is a head on ebay. However, you will need to make sure your engine type corresponds with the head.

Thanks for the info. So I am showing my lack of knowledge but is a Number 3 cylinder different from a number 6 or are they all the same.

They are all the same if they are correct for your engine. Find your engine number to the right of the rear fan housing. It's down in there. Suspect you have a 930/25 but confirm.

I have one 3.2 cylinder head, bare, that is no valves or springs,,,use your old ones if they are still good. no issue with the spark plug hole. it is a 2/86 date. no broken fins, cracks or welds.
