How to install gauges
I have pulled out all my gauges to install LEDs. I'm really happy with the way they look, they are much brighter now. SmileWavy
Now I got to put them back; not a big issue for the smaller ones, but I find it really hard to get the bigger ones to seat properly, and for the rubber ring not to get pushed up too high. Is there a trick? Can I use some sort of lubricant? I was thinking hand creme, any better ideas? |
I recall when I replaced the dashboard of my 86, I used WD40 (sprayed a little) on the rubber ribbed rings and it went in easily. However, a lot here do not recommend WD40 so any lubricant will do (vaseline or KY).

Liquid hand soap

I use Armor-all or a similar protectant. Works great. Try not to use WD40 on rubber, as the petroleum basis can break down certain rubber compounds. Best is silicone base.

Ok..ok.. I stand corrected...Use KY or vaseline in more important stuff :D

+1 on Armor-all. Put the rubber ring in its spot and use a cotton ball or paper towel to coat the ring surface where it will meet the gauge housing. Worked great and keeps the rubber pliable. Easy clean up.
