Burning oil smell

86 Carrera with approx 199k miles (unknown what the PO did to the engine) but any how, when I come to a stop I get a strong smell of oil, could this be worn valves guides? Though I look at the exhaust pipe and do not notice any extensive residue? Any ideas? The stench is getting to me.

smell

Try getting under the car and see where oil is leaking onto the heat exchangers.

Probably, oil is leaking from the valve covers, my guess.

That's called an air cooled porsche!

What you may be smelling are exhaust fumes. Be careful as your heat exchanger/exhaust system/heater ducting may be leaking allowing fumes into the cabin. Check it carefully, your health may be at stake!

Long shot but check the tunnel for gear oil from the transmission. If there is oil, your shift rod seal may need replacing. It's on my todo list...

Is there any easy way to differentiate between oil leak, brake and clutch smell?
I am broaching 110K miles and am having the same new revelation.

Had the same issue. Bad thermo gasket and oil somehow ran down the back of the engine on to the crossover pipe. (Back of the engine is where the clutch is

What's your oil consumption?

I had a similar issue on my Carrera... burning oil at idle. Sometimes there was visible smoke other times not. I rebuilt the top end. When i dropped the motor I also found a fairly huge leak at the breather cover (triangle of death), but it really only leaked under pressure, aka not at idle, so when you come to a stop all the seepage would burn off. I never saw puddles when parked even in a pristine garage, so I didn't realize it was dripping here until I was doing some throttle cable adjustment and was under the car while it was being revved and saw some drip drip drip.

I was not trying to pinpoint the source of the leak. Between my oil consumption (more than 1 qt per 500mi) and occasional smoking, I just figured a top end was in order. Before dropping the motor I did a compression check (very healthy) to be as sure as possible that the bottom end (pistons and cyls) didn't need attention. I measured the ring gaps, pistons and cylinder bores when I tore them down, indeed they were very healthy. Put it back together and it does not smoke. Haven't had a chance to measure oil consumption yet.

Guys, before you get too crazy, check the hoses coming off your heat exchangers. Mine was ripped, and when my trans main seal was leaking, all I could smell in my car was gear oil. Yuck!
