Where is temperature switch located?

Using the electrical wiring diagram, I think I've narrowed down an interim problem with my AC. It will run 5 or 10 minutes then shut off (both fan and AC clutch). If I try it again in a day or so, it does the same thing. I have 12v at pin 30 to the fan motor relay but the relay does not pick up (no voltage at pin 86). The relay is good. The common point for the voltage to the clutch and the fan motor is through a temperature switch.

1) Is the temperture switch the variable knob on the console? If not, where is it located?

2) How do you access this switch? There are four screws on the side panels but I'm not sure if you go through the side or the front.

thanks in advance

Hello, I am not sure if my 80 is the same as yours but if it is, the switch is on the console just above the shifter( I know you already know this) it is a rheostat (sp) switch the more you turn it clockwise the longer your compressor will run, kinduva a manuel thermostat. Yours could be dirty and losing its contact after you set it, on my car there are two screws on either side of the cover, remove them and you can access the switch.

You can tell if it is the switch by simply jumpering it across when you have access, if the comp runs continually, the switch is the likely suspect.

Please remember I'm telling you what works on my 1980 sc your car could be the same, slightly different or completely different.

Good luck with it....regards Peter
