Winter driving

How many 911 owners drive their cars in the winter with colder climates I don't mean driving it in a snow storm but when roads are clear I myself was never a believer of storing my car and drive it all year round when roads are clear but I do get my cars rust proved once a year

Around here we can't depend on roads remaining clear for even the next 10-15 minutes, especially so for mountain pass roads or even higher elevations. Best to keep the 911 in the garage.

There's a recent thread on winter tires and winter driving.

If you are a nut about keeping your spring plates nice and pretty, skip it.

Salt is a stinker.

my '86 is my daily driver in Denver, CO (and in washington dc before that) -- it's therefore seen a fair % of snowy/icy/slushy/etc commutes. It shows its 15x,xxx miles, but frequent high pressure car washes have kept the rust away. It's surprisingly adept in the slippery stuff with the right tires.

Mine isn't my daily car, but it is the secondary car (of two). So if my wife needs a car for the day, I drive the Porsche. Generally 2-3 times per week. Cold, rain, even a touch of light frost, no matter. It does stay in the garage if it's truly icy or snowy, but that's only a handful of days per year.

This is why I use all-season tires rather than full Summer tires like so many P-car owners run. Gotta be able to handle lower temps.

Plus starting off in 2nd gear, or with a "feather touch" on the go pedal.

Take mine out whenever the roads are clean. Not a daily driver but if the roads are clean there are alot less people on the road in the winter.

I was wondering the same thing about my '87 Carrera. I am wondering how bad it is to drive the car if it snowed yesterday, and the roads are clear but wet today. I plan on washing it in the local carwash at least once a week during the winter.

Thanks
-Glenn

Not me

limited daylight + my ability to "discover" potholes = disaster waiting to happen

Drove mine to work today in downtown Denver. Great ride in! I try not to drive when it is wet, but I just got a set of wheels with new snows so I'm excited to give it a go. I bet it will do well.

I have a hot water spicket outside for washing the car (coolest thing ever!) and I spray the underside when it needs it. Works well for the Mini - the other winter driver.

Just watch the colder temps as it affects traction. A lot less bicycles on the road...

Indeed -- one of the unexpected benefits of frequently driving in borderline conditions is that I have a far better understanding of my car's limits . . . both when starting and (more importantly) stopping.

I've also been quite surprised as to how well the skills I learned at a summertime porsche performance driving session have translated to winter driving situations

I woke up to about 7" of some nice fluffy snow. Lots of opposite lock and hilarity ensued. Even had automotive face shots.

Face Shots are fun -- had one of those getting out of my neighborhood while driving to work one morning after a huge dump last winter - the powder was deeper than my front bumper height, so a wall o' snow came shooting up and over my windshield.
