'87 Carrera - H5 trim ring removal?

UGH!!! Is there a trick to popping the headlight trim ring off? I removed the screw on the bottom, and what I did last time (yanking, prying, etc.) was clearly not good for the paint around the trim ring. There must be a knack to this?????

Thanks
-Glenn

Using the palms of your hands, bump/hit upwards along the sides of the rim.

I usually do one side at a time. Hold onto the top of the light/ring with one hand bump up with the other. This way if the rim suddenly pops loose it won't fall.

You need to break the surface tension between the ring and the rubber gasket. These can seem like they're glued in place after being on the vehicle for years.

I have also resorted to using Plastic trim removal tools to help gently pry between the ring and body.

Start near the bottom as it should swing out, then push the ring up to get it off of the bucket lip at the top.

thanks. Oddly though the ring will rotate... But I can't seem to pry it off. It feels like it is clipped tightly on the bottom somehow. It moves partially but won't come off.

Keep at it. You'll get it eventually. My H4 trim rings are similar in the degree of effort required. I also could rotate mine back and forth slightly. My fingers are usually very sore the next day.

Thanks. It's strange, though, that the bottom won't lift out. Even with major tugging on it. :-(

fold a shop rag double around the tip of a screwdriver and lightly pry it with a twist.

Thanks John. Should I prey from the bottom, or the top?

I used a wooden paint stirrer. Popped it in and pushed... It came right off. I am just a freakin' amateur here!!

Thanks for your help folks.
