airconditioning retrofit to early 911
The summers are miserable hot here and very humid to boot. I've seen lots of threads about upgrading existing systems, but none about adding A/C to a car from scratch.
Has any one added A/C to a early car? |

There is a guy in Losa Alamos NM who did it but I cannot remember his moniker. Search for the ultimate Air conditioning thread and I think you will see it.

Call Grif or the guys at Rennair. I am sure they can make it work for you thru one of their systems.

I thought the whole idea of a RGRUPPE car was to have it stripped down to the bare essentials. Seems like adding AC would go the complete other direction.
I would buy a 993 C4 for the summers/winter, and keep the early car for the 'shoulder seasons' -jack

from scratch
I had a COMPLETE a/c install into my '70 911, that did not come a/c equipped.
I am happy I did, anyone who rides with me is happy I did. In fact, after giving several friends rides in my 911, they had it installed also! Welcome to Scott's Independent Give Scott and Dan a call!!!

Well my mechanic did the work for me. Removed the driver's side battery box. Put in a 993 condenser. Under dash vents. Copper lines and R-12. Kept me cool last summer when it was 108 here in Austin. Didn't go out the day we hit 113.

I would go the wrecking yard route and locate the most current factory A/C I could find in my price range. But I would not bother with the front condensor/fan(blower) but instead install the 2 fans/blower to move air CONSISTENTY, CONTINUOUSLY through the rear deck lid condensor regardless of engine RPM.
There is only ONE shortcoming of the Porsche factory A/C system, poor efficiency of the rear deck lid mounted PRIMARY condensor. Were I to install an A/C in my '78 Targa that's the way I would start, no front condensor/fan/blower and aftermarket radiator fans to provide consistent airflow for the rear deck lid condensor. Richard Tuthill was working on one using a VW Polo compressor, a 996 heater box, and the original 911 fan .. not sure about the condensor

Whatever you do don't go with a vintage compressor. Get a modern Denso unit. A high efficiency condenser under the engine grill is probably also best way to go.
