Oil Cooler Air Scoop
Our host sells an air scoop that replaces the right side marker light in the front bumper for 911's with the impact bumpers. Anybody have an opinion about doing this modification? The part is $89.95 (less money than a new side marker light...I have a broken one anyway).

They work well with the Carrera cooler and block off...I have one on my SC and the forced air does the job in our 100 degree plus summers. I tape it off in winter.

My car came with one from the PO don't have a reference for a before/after but it seems very functional. Obviously you'd have to be driving at speed for it to be of use it's going to do nothing while sitting in traffic.

Had one on my SC and it helped keep the temps down on the hot days. On my 86 Carrera the PO had removed the passenger side fog light and built a duct to the cooler that worked very well too. IMO they're worth the money and couldn't imagine running an air cooled 911 with some type of ducted air flow to the front oil cooler in the hot temps we have here in the summer.

I couldnt see spending that kinda money on a piece of plastic so i made my own out of steel. The cup part is from a valve cover off an old bostitch air compressor.

What is a "blockoff under the bumper" and what does it do?

Quarter circle cut from a sheet of ABS plastic bought from Amazon for $10.
To work the oil cooler needs air to flow through it. Porsche did a good job making a plate that sealed the back side of the cooler to the fender. They forgot to seal the area in front of the cooler. Air enters under the bumper or through the scoop we are talking about but it can run out the bottom and not pass over the cooler. Think path of least resistance. If you block off the bottom you are forcing more air to pass through the cooler. More info and photos at the link. -J Stilll Running Too Warm ![]()

Oil Cooler Scoop - My Solution
OttoBob
I have a '85 Carrera, only 50k, so I am very careful with cooling, especially in Texas heat. I added a Spal oil cooler fan that has been incredible, and really like the scoop offered by our host but am a little uptight about changing anything on my car, plus wanted to keep my lights. I made a foam core model to test this part's theory, then made one in aluminum that bolts right to the bottom of my oil cooler using the same bolts, it takes just a couple of minutes to install/remove, and really controls Texas summer temperatures. It shoots a massive amount of air right to the cooler (when moving, of course). I think the aluminum stock at the metal store was about 8 bucks. I used a cheap bender from Harbor Freight. An afternoon's work, plus a bit of black satin paint and I am almost done. I will make another this winter that is a bit cleaner in appearance, with a slightly taller side to stop any air escaping from the side. Hope this might help. Cheers, Paul ![]() ![]() ![]()
