912 upgrade
I ran across this add "1984 Porsche 930 Turbo Slant nose steel body and suspension conversion. Air Conditioning, Sun roof, and Power windows. Turbo brakes. No Engine or transmission. Base chassis and Title is a 1968 912. No rust. Will deliver if needed" OK with it being a 68 that should be the short wheel base, the slant nose kit looks good wheels centered in wells etc, if they put the 84 rear suspension in it would that bring it back to lwb specs? I plan on putting a 3.0 930 motor and a 915 w/lsd in any reason to not do this? I welcome advice from the brain trust:D

The turbo engine will eventually eat the 915 alive (even if you do the various strengthening mods to it). There have been many posts in the 930 section, throughout the years, of this very thing, even when the owners babied the 915 (which is really difficult to do with a turbo engine bolted to it :D).

You need to find out if they changed the rear banannas, because if they didnt you'll need to cut off the rear flares and reposition them.

, I am well aware of the problem with turbo's and 915s had this combo in my sc for the last 15yrs(that's why I have a new 915 inbound lol) I get about 5yrs before it needs to come out. I am mainly concerned about making sure the 915/930 bolts up to a 68 912 |
Ok so you know about the 915 issue and you confirmed that the bananna are from a LWB car. What exactly is your question? :confused:

I believe a 68 912 comes with a 901 trans and a 4 cyl engine. are the trans mounts and engine mounts compatible with a 915 and a 6cyl, sorry about being unclear

Trans mounts for the 901 are the same for 4 or 6 cylinders. The motor mounts are completely different and 6 cylinder mounts will need to be welded in if they haven't been already. 6Cyl mounts are in the rear corners of the engine compartment and the 4 cylinder mounts are about in the middle on the sides of the engine compartment.

Sounds like a fun project! From my understanding:
The 915 trans will not fit perfect into a SWB car. There are mods you need to do in order to make it work. Some move the entire torsion tube, other bolt it in and bang up the rear seat area, along with other things to worry about. I believe Haycait911 installed a 915 and 3.0L into his early SWB car with using the second option: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/446271-help-please-putting-915-into-swb-axle-set-up.html Engine mounts are also different like they say above. You will need to cut off old 912 mounts, and buy 911 mounts, and weld them in accordingly. |
Pretty sure you just need to change the flanges on the 915 gearbox and thats all. Maybe the trans mount. You dont need to do anything with the torsion tube because the 911 and 912 are the same body for cost effective reasons. The early 911's also came with the 901 and a 915 will bolt right in. True on welding in the motor mounts and I think you also need to install the 911 oil tank which may require some cutting in the area where the oil tank sticks through. Your also going to have some electrical wiring to do. Overall its not too much work.

This car is SWB and 4 years before the release of the 915 for any model. It's not just a bolt in affair. The link to haycait's build will shed some light on it. |
I have a 3.6 with a 915 in my track car I built out of a 66 912:) the torsion tube was cut and sectioned with a tube from a 72 or later so as to get the correct geometry, the mounting for the trailing arm's is in a different position due to the different length of the arm's. I suppose you could cut the ears off and reposition them if you had all the measurements. When I did mine I checked and you could run the early arms if you had turbo flairs, however rim size is limited as is tire choice, and your geometry will not be correct. I also had to replace the crossmember where the shocks bolt to behind the motor with one from a 72 or later, engine motor mounts, late trans mount is also needed. When I finished I had a perfect track car, steel turbo fenders, and rear quarters, full cage, 9's&11's glass bumpers, 3.6 tail/with 65" cf top wing and 2240 wet.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387391588.jpg

This car is has an 89.3 inch wheel base and the 6 cylinder mounts are already installed.
