If not a 911 than what?

If any of you deceided to dump the p-car and move on to another type of performace car what would you choose within your means?

Pics would be good too!!

CamB 08-26-2002 04:26 PM

I think Porsche have some sort of advertising slogan which sums up how I feel about this right now.

Now where is it?

I know I can find it...

... here we go. "There is no substitute."

That is how I feel.

Although I could get talked into a Lotus Elise or a "modernised" Europa or Elan. You would have to forbid me from owning a 911 though before I would resort to those. Ferrari's cost too much.

I also have a dream involving a Lotus Elise, two Suzuki Hyabasa engines and a common crankcase (for 300+hp at 10000+ rpm).

Brian993 08-26-2002 04:28 PM

I agree Cam, just for entertainment purposes only!!;)

eion 08-26-2002 04:29 PM

I'd say a TVR Tuscan. Mmmmm.... if I can save up enough, I'll get one, but as well as, not instead of, the Porsche.

I'm never going to dump the P-cars, but my recent object of lust can be seen at http://www.downsengineering.com/

185 HP Hayabusa in a 975 lbs. sportsracer, and the motor can easily be taken to 250 HP for another $10K. Not street legal, though.

If I wanted to take a passenger and/or register it for the street, it would be the Ultralite S2K at http://www.wcmultralite.com/main.html

Out of my price range, but very sweet is the Radical SR3 Supersport at http://www.radicalmotorsport.com/new_range/new_range.htm

scott_rogers 08-26-2002 05:51 PM

Does the new Mini Cooper S count as a performance car? Wow those new Minis are great. How can I convince the wife that we need a 4 car garage so we can keep everything we got and get a Mini. For now I'll keep the P-car and just look to the Mini as a good future purchase. At least it would be a German car.

There are only a few other sports cars that interest me:

Modern
BMW M5 coupe in black.
Bentley Turbo R, late 80s.

Classic
Ferrari 330 2+2 in Silver
Jaguar E-type roadster, series 1.5 in BRG
Series 2 Corvette in charcoal gray.

The modern ones are more likely - I'm not sure I'd find the older cars all that comfortable, from what I've read.

jbripps 08-26-2002 06:36 PM

One car I had my eye on before buying a p-car was an Acura NSX. There's not much to criticize on that car. I've done my research. I'm much happier with the club following with P-cars. Many more people involved.

I'd still like to get one at some point, of course, but as an addition to the family, not a replacement.

Probably a <a href="http://www.goginetta.com/g4/g4coupe.htm">Ginetta G4</a> - the combination of 240HP + 1400 pounds + 6"x13" wheels just sounds like a good clean way to live. -- Curt

Umm, I'll play. Dahlback racing in Europe has a pretty interesting audi turbo-powered Golf I'd really like to own:

600-900 hp depending on turbo and setup, pretty damn lightweight and a whole lotta fun.

If "look at me" status is your goal, the new 911 fills the bill. If you wish to be subtle about it, a top of the line Lexus or mid to low line Mercedes. Raw performance for the dollar spent, the Z-06 'vette. Top performance, and who cares about price? Ferrari. But, you asked "within your means". Hands down, if I didn't have a 3 decade emotional hook with the '72S? Z-06. In a heartbeat! Money aside, I think I'd enjoy driving a Z-06 more than I'd enjoy driving a 996 TT.

Bill Douglas 08-26-2002 07:07 PM

A car I've been thinking about recently, to have as well as the 911, is a Karmann Ghia cabriolet. Not origional or in perfect condition, but rather a cool looking cab in silver or banana yellow. And the great thing about it is if you blow it up, just swap in another VW beatle engine and you're going again the same afternoon :)

motion 08-26-2002 07:19 PM

When I come across the bux I springing for a 88-89 Testarossa.

Randy W 08-26-2002 08:05 PM

I considered a Ferrari Dino 246 or a Lamborghini Bora, but nothing else comes close. There really is no substitute for a early 911S or RS or ST. Notice how Porsche isn't using this slogan anymore? Maybe a Ferrari 360 really is better than the latest Turbo....

Brian Cameron 08-26-2002 08:10 PM

If the 911 wasn't so damn beautiful... I guess I'd look at one of these for performance without attracting unwelcome attention...

Volvo S60R is a turbocharged 2.5 liter, 5-cylinder engine, which provides 300 hp and 295 ft/lbs of torque at 2,100 rpm, propelling the car to 155 mph (electronically limited).... 6-speed manual gearbox, or a 5-speed Geartonic semiautomatic, which allows full automatic or manual gear selection.... four-piston Brembo brakes with aluminum calipers to help reduce heat buildup. Anti-lock brakes, traction control and Volvo's Dynamic Stability Control System (DSTC) are all standard on the S60R.

Twin 1200cc Kawasaki ZX12 engines were used, each producing approximately 190bhp.

In November 2001, the Z100WR posted a 0 to 60 mph time of 2.8 seconds and a 0 to 100 mph time of 6.3 seconds using road legal tyres.

I agree with a number of you about the appeal of the Lotus 7-type toys--light weight, high power and NO modern conveniences whatsoever. Sweet.

But I drove a friend's mildly modified 95 Viper the other day and it was an eye-opener. Just enough rough edges to make it really appealing and talk about tor-que'!

If only it was air-cooled.....

For Show and not too much dough: Ferrari 308GT4. Not as pretty as a GT, but they sound a whole lot better then all but the earliest carb'd 308 GT(S)'s. They also cost a lot less at about $14K to $20K and most people would still recognize it as a Ferrari.

For Show and a lot more dough: Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 (2 headlight model). A beautiful car for a reasonable ($40K - $60K) amount of dough for a V12 Ferrari.

For Go and not a lot of dough: Buy a TVR 2500(M) and a used 5.0 Mustang motor. Pitch the TR6 boat ancher from the TVR and drop in the 5.0. After a few bruised knuckles and some swearing, it should go right in. A few more dollars to graft some vented brakes on to the beast and I'd be able to smoke just about anything with 4 wheels which seats more then 1 person. I could most likely also do it for less then $10K!

930Chas 08-27-2002 02:27 AM

If I hadn't already dedicated myself to the life long pusuit of all things Porsche, I would purchase a '61 Austin Healey 3000 mkII.

thrown_hammer 08-27-2002 03:03 AM

Within my means? HMMMM..... That's a tough one, if I stayed within my means I wouldn't have my P-car!:D

Mikkel 08-27-2002 03:27 AM

Same price range.... A BMW M3.

Money no object and I'm not allowed to choose 911s......? No idea. Not a Ferrari that's for sure.

jyl 08-27-2002 05:14 AM

If you think about all the great cars out there, it's kind of like a candy store.

My "someday I'd like to have" list, which tries to be economically reasonable (only cars I could conceivably afford someday, let's say under $50K):

- Jaguar XKE S1 fixed-head (have wanted one of these since I was a little boy)

- BMW 3.0 CS/CSL (probably the loveliest coupes I know of)

- Ferrari 308/328 (not at all my most desired Ferraris, but remember the price limit)

- AC Cobra (I'd actually prefer a good replica so I could actually drive it)

- Lotus Esprit Turbo (I think this goes back to James Bond fantasies. But it would be a nice car to drive, when it drove. And they're pretty cheap, for good reason I suppose)

- Land Rover Defender 110 (I had a '63 Landie, sold it to a guy in SLO, and want to buy it back someday. Failing that, I'd take a recent one. There's nothing like a LR)

- Some bikes: Ducati 750SS from the 1970s, BSA Gold Star Rocket, BMW R90S.

Ultima GTR

I've been fantasizing about building an Ultima GTR. However I would have it powered by a 993 TT with a Quaife 6sp Sequential Trans. I guess my way of a 962 for the street.

JEB 08-27-2002 06:12 AM

So many cars - so little time

There are many cars I would like to own if I didn't have the P-car. Some if the things I have been looking at:

A Ferrari Mondial - sort of like the P-car - can take the family on a short trip and still have the performance - lots of curb apeal - good prices on them now - but the service scares me.

A Sunbeam Tiger - with the 289 Ford mill - what a great car - although I have a TR-6 I won't part with so - this would be sort of redundant

A mid 60's Jeepster - with updated running gear so you can take it on trips - just a classic 60's look

A Series II Land Rover - I think they are so neat

Late 80's Audi Coupe Quattro - I had the coupe - not the quattro at the time and loved it. I think this would be a neat car for not much money - again performance and you can take the family on a trip

That is a short list - there are alot of other neat cars at affordable prices - only limited by garage space - wifely concerns - and $.

Who knows what else is in the future?

911boost 08-27-2002 06:28 AM

A good Shelby Cobra Replica with an authentic 427 sideoiler making about 500 horsepower and a 4 speed. No radio, no top. No excuses, just in your face power, ofcourse I'd probably kill myself, so I'll stick to more sane vehicles.

Bill

I should finish my 69 Spitfire w/283/4spd since I can't afford a cobra!

JavaBrewer 08-27-2002 07:08 AM

Well two vehicles come to mind. If I want to keep the sports car thing going there's only car out there that could possibly fill the 911's shoes:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/512BB.jpg

Now if I'm going to go in a complete different direction then this would be my ride:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Defender.jpg

lukeh 08-27-2002 07:35 AM

1984 Ferrari 288 GTO (400 HP and the best looking car ever).

1971 Lamborghini Miura P400SV would be a close 2nd.

Sarah 08-27-2002 08:56 AM

This would be in addition to...not replacing the p-car. The Thunderbirds have really been catching my eye lately.

Mini Cooper S with a Cayenne drive train...oh wait I blew my budget when I said Mini Cooper S!

Any car for under $10k to compare with a 911? Really can't think of one. Maybe, but not quite, an MGA.

i've gotta go with the lotus elise, if only it was street legal in the US... i hear it's coming in the next year or so, but the new model is slightly more "rice" looking than the original...

great car though - no frills, very light, and handles amazingly well...

Pauli33 08-27-2002 09:10 AM

or there's also the Exige, a track only variant of the elise... certainly looks a lot wackier, but for some reason i still really dig it...

I'm not sure. The RS4 isn't an SUV. I suspect Porsche was thinking they wanted something that could be off-road capable while still being "a Porsche." The reality of course is that almost all SUVs are driven only on the pavement. That makes a good argument for an RS4-type vehicle...kind of a 911 station wagon, and while they're at it, a 3-door hatchback. I think they could do something that would have great style and be fast and useful. Of course maybe with the Pepper they were trying to make something that wasn't even close to the sports car shape so there wouldn't be direct comparisons.

John Brandt 08-27-2002 09:48 AM

Definitely, Definitely the Lotus
