Mass Air Flow vs. original barn door sensor on 3.2

As the original barn door flapper sensors age, is there any advantage to converting to a MAF for a street driven car? My original was replaced with another used one by the previous owner a few years ago, but I wonder if it makes sense and runs smoother with a newer sensor style? Seems that as the sensor arm creates more wear in the sensor and is repositioned, it eventually simply wears out and can't be replaced, so an upgrade may be necessary.

Thanks for any experiences you can share.

Jack,

Many advantages to the MAF but you can't just put a MAF in place of the AFM you have to rewrite the Air Fuel portion on the motronic software because the response time of the MAF is like 1/1000th of a second while the AFM is like 1/10th second. Most MAF conversions I've seen don't work very well because of this reason. I know because I re-wrote the motronic code to fully support a Ford racing MAF used on the 5.0L mustangs. I'm not selling the product because it simply is to expensive to market, in the $2000.00 range. I have two 3.2L 911s running my solution at this time and they both run great.

Here's a pic of my personal car:

Thanks for the reply. I did understand that there would have to be programming changes to the DME, and I hadn't heard anything about the Autothority conversion recently, so this seems to make sense.

I do like the idea of updating things to make them work better. However, when I compare my '84 Targa to my 70 914-6, the additional amount of complexity doesn't always seem worth it. I'd love to have the advantages of electronic fuel injection (especially with today's fuels), some creature comforts and rustproofing of the modern cars, but with the early car simplicity. I can certainly see why the Singers are so well liked (but way out of my price range).

I also use a Ford MAF on my turbo 3.2 with the stock chip. I used a split second controller which is piggybacked off the DME. Works flawlessly and its even adjustable with the controller. I only went this route due to the turbo as I didnt want to pressure through the barn door. On a n/a car its probably a waste of time and money.

Indeed! Wasn't Steve Wong offering a MAF with appropriate chip some time back? That's where I'd go...

Here is a pic of my 75 Carrera with an 86 3.2 with a custom MAF air sensor, K&N filter, Split Second PC programmable fuel map controller and Split Second in dash air fuel ratio meter. All I can say is it starts first time, every time, hot or cold and runs really well. It was installed by the PO, so I am not sure if I would have gone down this route myself for a purely street driven car.

Here's my setup, Gekkatec MAF using a Ford focus sensor. Documented HP gains around 10HP Low and High RPM in normally aspirated cars. ("911 and Porsche World" Mag, issue 188). Turbocharged HP gains is another story.

SAL, I'd be interested to try your MAF setup since I know you've re-written the motronic code to easily account for bigger injectors, target AFR's, etc.
