What's your thought on arrows?
Helpful or annoying, in the context of pointing out important things in pictures:

Definately not annoying, I would say they are essential
How about a pict of a MFI engine compartment with an arrow pointing at the speed switch! Jeff |

They don't have to be so big and bold.

Very helpful but overkill on the size.

Looking at the subject I assumed we were talking about the F1 team where they didn't compete in the Hungarian Grand Prix and Heinz Harald-Frentzen left.
With the arrows. They are too big. 1/2 the size would suffice. Should turn out great though. ![]() |

Wayne, arrows are great, but in your example, too big.

Agree!
Yepper.....
"Narrow Arrows" is the way to go. Use 'em, but dont' let them gain too much weight! (nice pic, by the way....hope mine looks half as good, when I do my winter rebuild...) John |

You might also consider using numbers instead of colors to differentiate your arrows. In example, if in the text you were planning to refer to the light green (blue?) arrows to describe one thing and the dark (bright?) green arrow to describe another, you will find that a significant percentage of your audience (> 10%) can't follow very well due to color blindness.

I need arrows, and big ones.
I do not know much about auto mechanics and am learning. I had a hard time finding some of your arrows in 101 projects and did not have any idea about the general area to look in the pictures provided. I think you need to assume most people are like me and let the more mechanically advanced bear with us dumb ones.

Arrows are great help. Just don't do it like Haynes. Their pics are greyscale and so are the arrows. So the arrows get "lost" or are very difficult to see in the pics.

For those of us with very little experience wrenching our P-Cars those arrows are very helpful. I do agree that the size could be smaller. Another idea...(although possibly to difficult or time consuming?) would be to actually outline the part you are discussing...not just circle it but actually outline it so that there is no chance that the part being discussed can be mistaken. (You see...some of us are not quite as smart as your average bear.)

My opinion regarding the arrows:
1. Too large and too colorful, unless each of the colors that you used represent something different. Another way of differentiating the arrows is labelling it with numbers like this: ![]() 2. Too randomly placed, should be straight horizontal or vertical 3. Don't overlap the place where you want to point out with the arrow.

Arrows with numbers in them is a great idea. If they get too big, it will still be a big benefit to have them labeled in some way.

Definitely like the arrows, especially since I don't always know the name of the part being reference.

My vote (for what is worth) goes to color arrows with numbers and no overlap with the part.
