unichip on a 3.2??
 

Does anyone have any experience with the Racers group unichip- which is their "tuneable" chip that piggybacks onto the exisiting chip. I am told they often see 10-30hp gains, with similar torque gains. I have a euro spec 3.2, which already routinely puts 230 hp at the rear wheels, but if I can get 20hp or so I would love to try it. Car is an 85 carrera that is an everyday driver, but goes to the track every couple of weeks.
The unichip costs about $1600. The racers group offers a 90d money back trial, which sounds good- unfortunately this is only good if they do the install. I live in FL, and the dealers here will refund the cost of the chip itself- about $600, but not the $1000 labor they charge for the install and several hours of dyno tuning. I am reluctant to gamble the $1000 labor unless some others have had good success with the product.

Since your engine was originally tuned for better quality gas than what is generally available in the USA, what kind of gas are you feeding it now?

And, 230 hp is rather unlikely at the wheels, since it only developed 231 hp DIN at the flywheel! If you are basing your statement on dyno numbers, they are inacurate, and you should ask for a refund and tell the shop to get their equipment calibrated!

If you get the new chip, what kind of gas are you going to feed the engine in a country with declining octane levels in the fuel? And, in the future???

For fun, I put 89 in my car even though with the weltmeister chip, it recommends at least 92. Well, someone said it produced more power...that may or may not be true, but it sure produced a lot of clicking at high revs. I don't know if it's detonation or not, but the sound is the same sound you get when you have the points gap too close on a mechanical distributor (doh, which is why I assume it's detonating).
anyway..that's the scoop..it is not a friendly sound.

230hp at the wheels is accurate for possible 964's but not 3.2's, even Euro's. I'll take the worse scenario, $1600 for maybe 10hp, thats $160/hp. Seem rather high. SSI's and a better exhaust will get you at least 20hp at about $1500, thats $75/hp. As far a chips, I got my Autothority chip for less then $200 off Ebay. About what it is worth.

I don't know how accurate dynos are- but the car has been on 2 different dyno setups about 14 months apart- one measured 228hp at the rear wheels, and the other measured 230. That seemed reproducable to me, accurate?- don't know, but at least reproducable. Engine was rebuilt by one of the better race engine guys here in FL- Mike Bruns- by the PO about 3 years ago. In FL I can get 92 gas easily- and it gets 110 on the track. The car is a Euro or ROW car (so higher compression) and also no O2 sensor, and the cat somehow isn't there anymore http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif The car presently has an autothority chip-installed by PO, so I can't tell if it is really doing anything. Exhaust system has been upgraded, also by PO by one of the better shops in the area. That is one of my questions- I am getting better than average Hp already, will I see anymore with the remapping software?

Then your car is a bit more then "euro spec". With all that, I would think the gain would still be minimal, especially since you already have a chip.

Really, Autothority programs thier chips as well- I would think that whoever put it in would have had it programmed w/ your mods in mind. I would leave it alone.


Remember, 4lbs= 1hp. A gallon of gas is aprox 5- 7lbs. Just leave your tank 1/2 full and you get a greater gain than your $1600 chip!

This thread gives rise to my question. I have a "regular" 84 Carrera Eurospec and I feed it normal premium gas. 1) Should I be giving it something higher or adding an octane booster; 2) would a chip of any kind add power to my car; and 3) are there any performance mods for a Euorospec car that are worthwhile?

I'm not quite up for a 3.2 to 3.4 conversion, which is a proven hp boost and I have heard conflicting opinions on everything else, from chips to SSI exhausts.

Any opinions?

I am curious about the unichip as well. The product seems like a good idea for a car with mods (tuned to the specific car and mods).

If there is no Oxygen sensor in the system, how is the DME computer adjusting the mixture and various parameters on the motor? Is it in "limp home" mode all the time?

Thanks for reactivating this thread- I am still thinking about it, but have not done anything.
The row car originally did not have an oxygen sensor. It had been "Federalized" and an O2 sensor was added using hardware built by Valentine-an old company by the now radar detector guru. Anyway, we took out the federalized stuff, and it is now running as it was meant to run. Nope, don't have a clue how the dme adjusts for anything- it probably doesn't. Car runs great anyway, and goes like a scalded cat! I would still be interested if anyone has any info on customized mapping.
