996 gearbox conversion
Hello to all,I am new to this forum,Im wondering if anyone can help,I have an enquiry to fit a GT3 engine/box into a 1999 996 2 wheel drive, can anyone give me advice to what is exactly involved with the conversion and all the parts we will need.Or any alternative way of doing this,of course without buying a GT3,Im sure this would be the easy option, but this guy loves his mint 996 and wants it to go faster!
thanks Richard. |

Very bad idea IHO- anything can be done, doesn't mean it should be. ECU's likely to be the big issue.
I'd likely talk him into building a larger displacement version of a motor more compatible with the current ECU and gearbox. 3.6 or 3.8 liters and perhaps ~380 hp is likely possible for much less effort and expense. I don't know of anyone that's done a GT3 swap into a 996 (for obvious reasons) so I'm not sure you're going to get the list you want, but for the mechanicals you could start flipping through PET.

It's been done but it's not easy. Best way is to have the whole wrecked GT3
You need everything including the dash cluster

I know that's the story for the Cayman swaps. Or you run the motor from an aftermarket ECU.

What Dan J said. You basically need to rewire the whole car with a GT3 wiring harness and dash. Unless the Carrera has a popped motor and is basically a free car not even worth considering. Figure that it's a $50k project. Since I can buy a real 996 GT3 for that, why bother?

What the others say - sell the GT3 engine and box which will more than pay for a shed load of re-engineering work to the M96 engine...no doubt with change to spare and a lot less aggro (although this is supposition on my behalf)
There was a guy on PistonHeads a few years back who did the "make my 996 C2 go faster" thing very well...used AutoFarm in the UK, addressed the right bits to make something that was very competent, fully acknowledging that it wasn't a GT3, and that his (significant) investment was purely "hobby". IIRC he also did a capacity upgrade (AF do this as one of their menu options). He and AutoFarm did a very nice job, from memory. Certainly worth a Google. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved my 996 3.4 (I actually enjoyed it far more as a car than the 996.2 GT3 (before the pitchfork wielders come knocking, there were a whole host of "other" reasons behind my reasoning))...but I don't think putting the Mezger lump into the 996 is what I'd do...he'll end up with something that's neither here-nor-there and losing a fortune. Just my 2p....
