Wink Falling asleap when swiching gear

Hin there,

I bought my first pcar in march, tuned engine and interior up, and am on the road since last week.
... oh, pure pleasure ... (as you all know)

What stroke me odd is that switching gear is verry sloppy.
My daily car is a BMW525, i'm used to switch very fast, if I switch that fast on my SC it doesn't take it, feels like the synchronisation needs lots of time to be effective.
Ooonnnnlllllyyyy wwhheeennnnn sswwwiiittcchiinnngg slllooowwwwlllyyyy allll goooeeesss weeelllllll.

Is this a normal thing for a '80SC with only 75000 miles or is my new project going to be called 'rebuild gearbox'?

Bart.

Go to the Pelican 911 tech articles page and look for the article on "Shifting Improvements". While it will probably never shift like your 525, new bushings and a properly adjusted coupler can help a lot.

Making sure your clutch is properly adjusted won't hurt either.

Thumbs up

Yeah, thanks, glad you say that.

I'll put it up some places on my
things to do priority list next to
repaint, new tires & wheels, boost
up engine, change window rubbers,
install stereo, fix oil leak at valve cover,
refurnish front booth ...

I realy need to take a long 911 holiday

Bart.

Question

Ok guy's I haven't been quit honest with you.
I told shifting was sloppy in all gears...

Did some concentrated driving/testing this weekend
here ar the results:

First gear: difficult, shifting to 3rd an then to 1st usually does it.
Second: When accelerating untull 6000rpm only double clutching does the trick, if not it does not pass at all.
Third: This one is 100% ok, shifts like a rocket
4th: Sloppy but OK.
5th: Sloppy but OK.

Does this make any sence?

Thanks guys,
Bart.

My gear shift was getting very sloppy until I changed the bushings in the shifter. Its a cheap and easy fix. The ball socket bushing in particular will wear out over time. Mine had worn enough to break in half.

Bart, A 915 transmission will never shift like your 5 series BMW. The shifts are longer in a 911SC and it will bind going from 1st to 2nd. The 915 transmission is a good transmission, but it is not made for 0 to 60 type shifting. A BMW 5 series transmission is.
You can adjust some and it will help, but it will not be a similar shift.
