Turkey Day drive? Take the P-car to Grandma's House!

The 911 lost the vote.... It will stay home this trip.

I am leaving LaLaLand Tuesday afternoon to Las Vegas in the 944. Wednesday morning to Paso Robles (across the Mojave desert twice in 24 hours) via Tehatchapi Pass. Friday morning back to LaLaLand via 101. Watch for a Guards Red 944 with Nevada plates. Wave as I go by.

Where are you driving your p-car this week?

I don't have enough fender clearance to put tire chains on my 930 so I guess it has to stay home and take the 4x4.

All the way from West Covina to Huntington Beach!
But the 30 minute commute will be cool because I'magonna wash it in the mornin'. I love it when it's clean and the weather is nice. I think it adds days to my life span.

If I drive mine around the block come Saturday afternoon, it'll be a week before I get the stupid grin off my face!

Have a fun, and safe, drive!

Ryan! Figured you'd still be UNDER the p-car. How is it going?

JC! Went over your house Sunday afternoon. Looked awful white down there. I see Minneapolis has gotten 13" so far this storm. I guess winter has arrived!

Chili! This time of year is perfect in SoCal. Cool enough to use the heater in the mornings. Warm enough on the sunny days to use the A/C.

Gotta love it. Did the I-15 LAX-LAS-LAX drive last time in the 911. Even at the top of the grades, the oil temp never got above 190.

Most likely I'll be heading to Ashland from the San Jose area. Booring drive until you pass redding, but I know some choice roads around ashland that I will be visiting.

Oh yes, I am excited. Oooo, so excited! My very first time behind the wheel of a porsche was back home in my friends 914 one night when we were bored. We took turns scaring each other silly driving up and down the mountains. This will be my first trip home with my 911.

Everyone is coming to my house to view the P-car, so I will not be ables to drive it. We are having relatives from my side over, sofar 65 have said that they are coming. This continues a tradition started with my Grandmother.

I hope that everyone has a great and safe Thanksgiving.

Dan! Last time I went up I-5 thru Oregoner the troopers there had a very narrow view of any criminals with California plates entering their state and committing felonies (such as doing 56 in a 55). Every car pulled over had CA plates. Word to the wise there. I am in San Jose tonight, make sure the heater is working for the passes up there.

Bill! Where are you located? Wow, 65 for dinner? That's a crowd.

Heh, yeah, thanks for the warning. Luckily Ashland is the first town you hit on the way north, so I will be minimizing my danger.

Been giving my heater a workout around here lately, it should have no problem baking my toes over the passes. Only problem I have is that I can't find a sweet spot with the amount of hot air. It's either too much, or not enough. I don't know enough about how the heater is wired up to diagnose it yet, though. (is the heater blower a constant speed, on/off thing, or does it have different speeds?) All I know is on my old '71 bus I wired the heater box flaps open for winter and then undid the wire for summer.

I find that it depends on engine RPM and heat output (load). Climbing the passes makes it too hot, and down the other side gets cold. My heater fan (back one) is on-off. The dash blower is also on-off.

singpilot,

I'll wave if I see you in Paso. I'll be there from Wednesday night to Saturday. If you're not familiar with the area, I can recommend some good wineries.

I'd be driving my 911 if it had backseats in which adults could sit for a few hours without complaining.

/ Johan

Although I am taking my 993 out of the garage tomorrow a.m. for an oil change, our low tonight will be in the 20's and high tomorrow in the 30's. I'm gonna have to admit it's time to put her to bed for the winter after we get home from the doctor tomorrow (oil change). Will certainly have to give her one last pedal to the metal prior to getting home though!

Will be driving the Suburban for Turkey Day travel due to forecast of some light snow here in the Northeast.

I'm starting to long for the year-round drivability of the Southern U.S.!!! (Move to Soutwest in my future?????? .....Will have to OK it with the wife and kids first though!!

This Porsche thing is a sickness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe I can talk my wife into riding with the seat all the way forward to fit the carseat in back. Then I get in a good drive with my brand new adjustable konis on the front!

I'll be near Paso Robles in Atascadero.

A few years ago, in my 944 I drove LA to the Bay Area, for a bit. Then to Salt Lake for a week around Christmas, and then back to LA. I had to race a storm on the way home. It was coming in from the south and dumping snow all over Cedar City and I15 so I broke west over highway 6/50 and then down past Deathvalley. It was cold as hell but I didn't see any snow. I did see an indicated 140mph (super cold still air, down a slight hill, and maybe there was a breeze at my back). Still haven't seen that in the 911.

Am at home in Jean, NV. Had an interesting afternoon.

The traffic was bad everywhere in the LA basin, so I went north on I-5 to the 14. Thru Palmdale, then Pearblossom Hwy. to 395. North to 58, east to Barstow, and got on I-15 north to Vegas. Out on the flats, the traffic was actually light (later found out Victorville I-15 north was pretty much closed due to an accident).

One of the many Nazi Truckers on this highway decided to push me off the road by changing lanes while I was alongside. He actually leaned out the cab window, smiled and came across. I went off onto the shoulder, and got some good drifting practice. An amazing feeling, in the dirt, sloped away from the road, sliding sideways at 70, a semi 10 feet away.

I reeled it in, got back on the pavement, and dialed 911. Before the dispatcher even answered, a CHP pulls up behind me.

HE SAW THE ENTIRE THING! Trucker pulled over, felony stop. I wait discreetly behind, all traffic stopped behind CHP car blocking the road.

Long story short. One semi full of produce is rotting in the impound lot. One Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon (85,000 pounds of lettuce) Trucker is in lockup, and as far as I can tell, nothing is hurt on the 944.

What a day. The guy even swung at the cop. I didn't need to say much.

I wonder what tomorrow will bring?

Wow! You're lucky, man!

Time to get the '44 checked out underneath. At 70mph, even lightweight stuff can do plenty of damage. Who says cops are never there when you need 'em?
