'87 Carrera.......

Odometer broke around 110K miles. The white gear replaced, purchased from PP and working great.

97222 in the one I just replaced. Based on the remnants and pics I've seen, I think this has more to do with embrittlement of the plastic (heat and age) than mileage.

88 year and 153k on the speedo when it broke.

I guess I beat everybody so far. My speedometer on my all original '79 SC quit after only 50,000 miles. But that was last year, 33 years into its lifetime. The plastic worm gear, like all plastics seems to be subject to age and eventually gets brittle regardless of use.

230,000 miles, at 29 years of age. Not sure if it was the first time, as I just bought the car a couple of years ago. Just got the speedometer and tachometer back from North Hollywood last week, as I had them install a cool analog voltmeter in the lower part of the tach face.

90,000/23 years. My understanding is it has more to do with the lubricating grease that Porsche originally used. The grease was not compatible with the gear plastic and it caused the plastic to break down. I can't recall where I read that.

Pelican Parts provides this service and many others that are not listed in the catalog.

I didn't personally put the mileage on the car. I bought it from a friend who drove it for 31 years and it odometer went at 299,999 miles. He said it had not worked in 12 years.

mhall131313 02-27-2014 03:28 PM
