My Steering Wheel shakes at speeds over 120 mph.

What happens if you go over 120mph, say 130-135mph? If the shaking stops you may just have a slightly imbalanced wheel.

How old are the tires, what is the pressures? Have you checked for lost wheel weights, loose tie rods, road hits on your wheels?

Depending on front / rear spoilers on ÿour SC, the front end is probably getting pretty light due to the air piling up underneath. This will tend to magnify any front end deficiencies you may have.
This can also be a very easy way to lose control of your car, so please play with cautions in this speed range in a street car.

Thanks for the replies...
I have 17" wheels and tires which are fairly new. I have a low front spoiler as well. I'm thinking possibly new bearings... or maybe a strut brace would help. The tire pressure is 30psi front and rear. Could it be a problem with the bushings or maybe tie-rod related. Should my car 911 (930) 3.3L drive smoother at high speeds? I'm thinking 150 mph should be smooth as 120 mph which should be as smooth as 100 mph. As for driving fast. Is there really a difference in driving 120 mph verses 85 mph other then tire speed rating? Again, thanks for the replies! |

I'm going to start, as suggested, and check for lost wheel weights and balance. I’ll most likely just have the wheels re-balanced and at the same time check for loose tie rods. Thanks all for replying... Oh yah... and Merry Chrismas!!!

I agree. Safety first! Driving at high speeds can be very dangerous.
I was just wondering for those who have driven a 911 (930) over 120 MPH what it felt like. Shaky or not? |

If all is well it should be smooth as silk all the way to 150 mph!
These cars track very well at all speeds if all is in spec! Sounds like tyre balancing or a bent wheel, tie rod or ball joint to me. Did you change the tyres or anything else rightl before this j happened? Cheers Bill

I've spent a fair amount of time in 911s over 120. Went 170 on the Autobahn as a passenger in a 964 Turbo, and spent enough time behing the wheel of my own cars (my old 79 930 and my current 72S). You should be getting feedback through the wheel but vibration, heck no. It sounds like you're on the right track with trouble shooting it so I'll go ahead and throw in some more jokes.
Have you tried switching wheels? take the culpret wheel with you. If it still shakes at 120 than I would say it's posessed and a preist is your best bet.

The 17" wheels on the car are aftermarket. I am going to change the wheels back to 16" fuchs wheels I have and have them balanced. I will have the 17's balance checked to see if they are off balance just to know if that might have been the problem.
Also, I am going to replace the tie-rods and ball joints. Any thoughts about changing the bearings or anything else that might make the car safer at high speeds? Thanks all... Last edited by cgh911sc; 12-27-2013 at 12:46 AM.. |
