Sunroof - Rear Rubber Seal
Some help please
The photo immediately below from the tech article: Yellow Arrow My new rubber seal, when centered, is about 1.12" short from each sunroof edge - not like the pic showing within about 3/16". My new rubber seal seems to be quite a bit narrower than the yellow arrow item. Thoughts about the 2 differences above? Also: location of this rubber seal. This photo and all the previous threads and PET don't make it clear. Is the rubber seal up against the ledge where the felt seal sits? Out from that edge? How far? Finally, someone else asked this question and the picture is from their unanswered thread: orientation of the rubber seal? See 2nd picture below. PET seems to show the seal 'opening slot' facing forwards (Front of Car/Sunroof) - correct or not? On the other hand, the Yellow arrow photo above doesn't seem to show the short side edge of the seal that would be visible if the 'opening slot' faced forward and the larger flat side was glued 'down'. Something is amiss or amuck here... Help please - that's about 4 different questions/issues on one dufus seal... thanks, Jim ![]() ![]()

Sorry to see noone has helped you. AFAIK the slightly shorter length and narrowness of your new seal are not problematic. On my car, I don't even think I had an open or closed face (slot). I think I just had a solid piece of rubber, which was up against the felt seal. It seems that the opening or slot should face rearward so it doesn't collect water.
That's the best I can do. At least this will bump it for you and maybe someone more knowledgeable can jump in.

I asked the same ? once & never got a resolve. Believe that I faced the slot toward the rear. No problems, but I don't drive in the rain.

I just did the seals on my '82 SC and noted the shorter rubber piece. Don't think it matters. Looks like it's intended purpose is merely to funnel water to the sides of the sunroof well where it will drain away, (make sure your drains are clear). If water does get by the main seals, the rubber strip catches it and directs it to the side. As long as the rubber is long enough to overlap the well sides, you're golden. I mounted mine with the groove facing forward, narrowest face down. Works great. I also left a gap between the felt seal and the rubber one so the water had space to move to the sides.

Thanks Bryan~! Sounds like you thought it out and applied reasonable logic - and often that's about all we get to do with some of these details...
I'll use your methodology on this - seems more likely than not! Your 1st post Bryan? Keep it up! Regards, Jim

Yep, first ever. Been buying small bits from these guys for awhile and have always liked them. Was looking through the forums for exhaust info when I saw your post and figured I'd give it a go.

Just did my seal and agree that it is shorter side to side and approximately what you quoted. Similar to the other pictures, mine measured about 4mm parallel to the roof top.
Hope this helps others as well. ![]() ![]() |
