Reinstalling starter

Fairly stupid question, but I can't find the answer...

When I install a new starter, do I need to grease up the gear?

I didn't on mine, and it's been working fine for over a year. I have never read where you need to.

*Bump*

I saw nothing in Wayne's book or the Haynes manual.

Does Bentley or the factory manual have a different story.

I have replaced many starters on lots of different engines, marine and automotive... I havent see in any manual instructions to lubricate the gear. all the grease would be thrown off the flywheel and/or pinion gear in short time anyway

Thanks guys - nothing it is...

Done. It seems fine (it works, which is always a bonus when I am doing the wrenching).

It is a 2kW Nippon Denso to fit in the 0.8hp Bosch hole. Being over 3x the power, it certainly spins the engine quickly!

Cost was about US$175 - possibly the best deal I have ever got on something for this car.
